I have a Williams Little Chief 1975 (my first and only pin) and it's set up for free play (contacts on coin unit permanently connected). Is this in some way prohibiting me from playing a 4-player game? When we fire up the game, the 1 player light come on, and game play results in three balls before game over is illuminated (unless an extra ball is scored). However, the player never advances to 2, 3, 4... What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

After you push the start button for player 1 and the ball comes out into the shooter lane, pushing the Start button again should enable player 2. Push again for player 3 and again for player 4.

Then each player will take turns playing ball 1, then ball 2, etc.

Sounds like your game is setup for 3-ball operation, not 5-ball.

Did you mean the contacts on the "credit unit" stepper in the head are permanently closed ? so that the credit wheel never sees zero credits ? that is the ideal way to set EM's on "freeplay" http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index3.htm#free

The "coin unit" stepper is how many players are ""coined-up"" if that is gummed up or inoperable it will need to be serviced. http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index2.htm#steps

The manual looks pretty good for other game adjustments such as 3 ball or 5 ball https://www.ipdb.org/files/1458/Williams_1975_Little_Chief_Instruction_Manual_OCR_searchable.pdf

Peruman pressing the start button again does not result in addition of players. I'll have to take a look in the back. Yes, game is set up for 3 balls, not 5. My wife and I have been working through machine issues off and on for about a year, and getting it to play the way it is is a big breakthrough. We uncovered three loose wires that were very hard to even see, soldered them back on. We ungummed the bonus unit and got it operating again. she seems content with the fact that it plays on one player, but given it's a four-player game, I'd like to see it play to its fullest potential.

Given this information, I would guess that the player stepper is gummed up and will need to be cleaned. Can you locate it and confirm that you can manually move it back and forth properly?

Wafflequest - player stepper is in the backbox in Little Chief.

snyper2099 the components of the player stepper seem to move well, they just don't really do so during gameplay.
