On hearing about recent news that pinball companies have established / secured a license for a game that is fairly well know and free like Houdini, Oktoberfest, Robin Hood etc. how do they then secure that as a license?

Where can you search registered pinball licenses?
How can you find out if a theme is free / available?
What is the process to then to license that theme to that company?

also in the last 5 years what well know items were free that became licensed:
- Houdini
- Oktoberfest
- Robin Hood
- Alice in Wonderland

I think on some of the podcasts they are suggesting that they are free but I think they are then licensing or trademarking - not sure????

Quoted from PopBumperPete:

I hear that 'Surfs up' is copyrighterd, trademarked, incorporated and homogenized as a pinball theme
