Quoted from fosaisu:Did anyone ever enjoy it?
I used to.
Years back when I quit picking up a newspaper, I'd read it online. Along with a bunch of other funnies.
Since I started tech support. I reduced the funnies I look at everyday by about 3/4ths. I guess tech support provides much needed humor for me.
LTG : )
I did find this in my search for the Bassett strips above, which made me laugh. Once again, God bless Australia!
IMHO, the mid 90s when the far side and calvin & hobbes stopped being published was about when the funnies stopped being funny.
I think I turned to online comics a few years later after those started gaining some steam.
Quoted from OLDPINGUY:The Far side is Back!
Yes it is! I was glad to see the new website go up.
Quoted from OLDPINGUY:Having a Basset Helps. Having 2, hurts.[quoted image]
Beautiful dogs!

My grandfather would buy a paper everyday.
He would read the sports section and the funnys then the paper would go in the recycling pile.
Quoted from fosaisu:How is Fred Bassett still in print? Did anyone ever enjoy it?
You’re gonna want this!

Calvin and Hobbes is probably the only childhood memory of mine I can think of that hasn't been subjected to reboot destruction or licensing hell.
Every time I read through those books, I am relieved Bill Watterson never compromised his integrity. I still keep discovering new things about those comics every time I read them. He was able to integrate his passion for philosophy into his work without being preachy or political effortlessly.

Garfield has been the same way for years.
Quoted from Electrocute:Lost all interest in the comic section once “The Far Side” and “Calvin and Hobbs” disappeared.
And Bloom County, one of my favorites.
300px-Bloom_County_characters (resized).jpgI can’t think of the name of it, but there’s a newer strip that the author regularly refers to pinball in it. My coworker sends me links whenever it comes up, and the strips make me laugh.
The only Sunday paper comics I really remember reading was: (and I may get some names wrong)
Beetle Bailey
BC
Peanuts
Not from the paper, but I also did see Dennis the Menace and Marmaduke.
About the first time Garfield ever appeared was about the time I never read comics anymore.
I have never heard of Fred Bassett.
Garfield was funny the first couple of years but went steeply downhill besides it's creator being an absolute whore for merchandising.
Calvin and Hobbs was the peak of print comics, just a step above The Far Side. But both were the only comics I can every remember reading that literally had me crying I was laughing so hard. I think Calvin and Hobbs struck a chord because I think many of us can remember thinking what was going through Calvin's head.
I used to despise Fred Basset. That is until i synced it up with Pink Floyd's, The Dark Side of the Moon.
After that. It all just, clicked.
Quoted from DaWezl:Ok, the strip I’m thinking of is “Wallace The Brave”. My friend has sent me at least 3-4 pinball themed strips and just looking online I found another one.

This is as dumb as Fred Bassett to non-pinball people.
Quoted from LTG:Cartoonist is from Scotland. Different sense of humor compared to other strips.
FWIW, I thought Train Spotting was funny. Maybe it’s Scottish dog humor that’s the problem.
Any single Calvin & Hobbes strip contains more humor than all Fred Bassetts, Marmadukes and Family Circuses combined!

Tough but fair.
At least it's not The Family Circus. If you ever had a dog you can at least appreciate some of those Bassett strips.
Quoted from Berserk:At least it's not The Family Circus.
Cheers to that. Fred Bassett’s aggressive refusal to even attempt humor is still better than whatever they’re doing in Family Circus (with a few exceptions, of course):

Of course Family Circus also presents better opportunities for recaptioning:

I never heard of it and I used to read the "funnies" all the time as a kid when I'd visit my grandma. Looks like it sucks, but then again, foxtrot was my favorite and I have gone back and wondered wtf I was thinking
