It could only be built like that in the past. Today, there would be no way to build over a waterway of any kind. Could do irreversible damage to some snails or crawfish habitat.

Only thing is that 150K was a lot of money in 1936. $155,000 was spent on the house, furniture, and a guest house, the 2017 equivalent is $2.7 Million. A guess would be that an average 4 bedroom home, then would be $2,800, to $5,000. In 2017 an appraisal was written for $11 Million.
