    Quoted from PinsideTroll:

In north america most of their sales come from suvs and trucks. not a surprise. look at subway, closed 800 stores last year in US, 500 more this year - all to focus on opening more stores in other countries. new markets = more potential profit. its all about the $$$

Not that I would ever ever go to a Subway (the only time I did I got the worst case of food poisoning in my life), but the chain has more than 25,000 locations in the U.S. alone, every one of which is owned and operated by a franchisee. 500 closings is hardly an epidemic, and these closings have less to with corporate intentions and all to do with failures of certain locations, franchisees deciding to get out of the business because of increased operating costs and other reasons, and terminated leases.
