Definitely use a chisel tip. With the conical tips you don't get enough surface contact between the tip and the joint. You will need about three tips depending on what you are soldering: .0625", .125" and .187". The smallest tip is for IC's (it won't bridge the gap between leads) and small transistors. The next tip is for larger (driver) transistors and the last is for bridge rectifiers and other large joints.
Also, what does "didn't work for me" mean? Just trying to understand why you think the tip is the problem.
The one it came with has been working fine for me. Why don't you like it?
I haven't done any surface mount with it yet, maybe I would get something a little smaller for that.
thanks all. the conical tip that came with the iron, didnt work as well as a chisel for stuff like flipper coils etc. but i understand ill need a few various tips for other jobs...
