Incandescent bulbs?

#3 2 years ago

Looks amazing and can't imagine how much work went into this. I'd take incandescent vs. blue LEDs any day of the week

Incandescent bulbs?

As I've gotten older LEDs are looking worse and worse and I've been re-converting my games back to incandescent. My eyes are enjoying it much more and the colors on the playfield and artwork look much more natural.

This is a gorgeous WH20! I almost wanna ditch my routed one and grab this... But... Yeah gonna have to keep the money in the wallet today.

#5 2 years ago

Beautiful job. Very fair price, in my humble opinion.

So with you in this. The art was designed to look best with the lighting warmth of incandescents. None of the leds for pins have the right color temp, even the so called warm ones. I have tried all the varieties. It’s puzzling because many led bulbs for the home seem to get it right and can replicate incandescent temp much better.

Not a fan of LED’s in older games when they are brought back to new condition. The games are plenty bright when parts are new where the LED’s tend to almost be blinding at times.

This game was actually darker with LEDs it originally had installed in its ‘shopped’ condition I received the game in than with incandescents in its now new condition.

I have a bucket of LEDs I pull out of games that I can include if so desired.

The nostalgic incandescent glow is also something to be appreciated.

The games weren’t designed to ‘look best’ with incandescent lighting - that was the ONLY option. Best is subjective. If you grew seeing wh2o on location then that orange glow is gonna probably look ‘right’ to you and LEDs are gonna look ‘wrong’.

Yes, it was the only option. And while iterating the art work do you not think the artist chose colors and constraints that looked best with that only option? The type of light has a big influence on how colors and art appear to people. On modern games that are meant for leds the color palettes of the playfield are more suited for that. Whether consciously through awareness or through an artist looking at something in situ and saying gee that looks like crap and making adjustments.

I always convert a 90s pin back to Incandescents, it’s just how they should be and no led matches the look and feel 100%

I don't agree....my games with incandescent bulbs look like they're dead when sitting next to machines with LED conversions. The LED games simply look more alive, and are far more appealing to 'old' eyes. As you age, your eyes need more light, not less. That is, until you become a 78 year old woman and need those wrap-around shades to complement your floral vest.

Plus, the lower heat and power draw of the LEDs does nothing but help the game itself.

I do agree that older cars look atrocious when people put LEDs in the headlights and taillights....but that's a different story.

#15 2 years ago

Got it, hope I can continue to enjoy LED's for some time. Beautiful pin for sure, even with the lights off.

My Xenon notably popped when I replaced the controlled lamps with led. The incandescent just looked dim in comparison. And these are single SMD from Comet, nothing crazy.

That said, it's all subjective. Your pin, your way!

Nice to see a beautiful, crisp wh2o completely stock. Wh2o is such a gorgeous game. Hate to see the white boulder thing and powdercoated everything. Those are not easy to change back. Bulbs are easy to change.

100%.

#20 2 years ago

Yes, I had a WH20 (with incandescents) sitting between an EBD (with LEDs) and an MBr.
The WH20 just looked "sad" between those "bright and happy" machines.

I swapped the WH20 to LEDs and now everyone is "happy".

$11,000 for a White Water! That's a lot.

I wish people understood what kind of time and money a ground up restore costs:

New playfield set $1100
Mirrored Radcals $500
CPR Backglass not Translite $300
New ramps, plastics, lights, posts and dome topper $1300
New coils and mechs for all assemblies $300
New Siderails $100
New Coin Door $200
New Legs &100
New Power Driver $300

Thats over $4k in parts and $3k in labor. In this case, that puts the donor game at $4k.

Yeah I understand it costs a lot. Not makign a judgement on value just on absolute cost of the pin. The question is do the buyers think it is worth it. The answer is a definite Yes! the pin sold quickly. We are in a new era of pinball I guess.. I have a mint IJ fully restored with cleared PF, plated by Mike Chestnut (RIP), filled with mods, LEDs, shaker etc.. I spent a lot on it and it was worth it to me. But maybe not to others.

Since when is pinball hobbyists labor worth anything?

#28 2 years ago

People who think this is overpriced need to wake up or give up. Market has moved past you.

Let’s not overcomplicate this. Game sold quick.

#29 2 years ago

If I did not have one (tho not this nice) , I would have bought it at this price. Option is to wait for CGC to make them.

Never get the charge for labor... in the price of a game ...
Still say this is well done restore.

IT IS SOLD. In under a day.

So obviously, people get the charge for labor.

And don’t care about leds.

Or paying 5 digits for a whitewater.

The price police have been refunded and abolished. They just don’t seem to realize it yet.

Agreed. You can pick any number you want for labor, but if the restore sucks then it wouldn’t have sold as quickly as it did. Anyone have an idea of what it sold for? Usually everyone is kept in the dark on the final number anyway. Might actually help with determination of true value. We only ever see listing number, not final. Lol

White Water Base Game 6-8K
Parts 4k

=

Valuation

Sold all my restored games for asking price within first few hours, which is typically fair as labor doesn't really play a role. The days of finding blown out base games for 2-4 K no longer exists.

#34 2 years ago

You want a game in tip top shape, get ready to pay for the labor. Whitewaters like this aren't going to be a $5K game.

#35 2 years ago

This WH20 is now in my basement, mad a trade with Grover. It looks beautiful he does great work , to me his labor is absolutely worth something I am not sure if any of you have ever restored a game but its A LOT of work. With that said, some just ok WH20s are now going for 8kish, so if you just factor in parts he got not much for labor. We made a trade so it worked out well for both of us.

In regards to LEDs it looks great with the original bulbs in it, he gave me some LEDs should I decide to swap them in at some point but right now I plan to leave it in its original glory. What I may do is put my pinstadiums on it just to light up the center of the playfield a little more.

Thanks G-MAN!
