Item description

I am selling a mint, slightly used The Hobbit Smaug Edition. This game has the playfield protector and upgraded (thicker) artwork package. The game has had minimal use, works perfectly and in fact, still has the original protective shipping plastic on the sides of the cabinet and backbox. I paid over $9,000 for this machine and purchased it directly from Jack. I am selling the game for $6,750 firm. Accept cash/cert.check

Oh man. Wish I had the funds!

Minimal use by Mr. Bilbo Baggins? I guess he was busy in The Shire and dealing with Smaug... GLWS Bilbo!

Steal of the century right here... I would buy it in a second to use as a show game and sell it - but it cooler to let someone who couldn't afford one to get one now... Kudos to this seller for amazing pricing... Should last like 2 minutes.

if it was within driving distance i would have just snagged it

Now this is how you sell a game that is in decline. Jump a little bit ahead of the downward trajectory. The seller knows he wants out and has priced it better than anyone else. Alternatively, he could have simply ridden it down to its final resting place with no sale or lots of tire kickers. 6k? 5500? It's the exact same thing that happened with with GOTLE. People see a couple of sales at 6K. There's no way that someone would be excited about paying 7K now.

Holding at 21 in the Pinside top 100 is a game in decline...??

JJP hater? Once again one sale at a certain price doesn't mean all the games are then worth that price. I guess all Star Trek LE'S are worth $6k too since I recall once going for that price a while back. No...Same with any game.

Hell of a deal.

At the end of the day, not enough people have PLAYED Hobbit or the ones who played it didn't play it long enough to "get" it. Lots of people still listening to show impressions of "floaty" and "empty". Neither of those things are true once you're delved into this game. I had some of those same misconceptions until I really got my hands on it for a little bit. Unfortunately, sometimes mega-deep games take some time to be understood and appreciated. LOTR fanaticism didn't start until like 6 or 7 years after it came out. This game will find it's reputation the natural way: from experience. As a LOTR owner since 2008, I can tell you that Hobbit is absolutely in the ballpark of LOTR...it's a great "quest" pin if you want that type of experience...and the cinematic nature of this game is well beyond LOTR. They're great companion games.

If this isn't a joke...wow, what a deal. Someone should have already picked this up. seriously.

I've played it a number of times, and have gotten to "Into the Fire" twice (would be thrice but malfunctions killed 3rd attempt).

"Delving into the game" doesn't change the playfield - it's still very open and empty. The ramps are too far back to be fun to hit. Drop targets are great, but that's about ALL this game has to offer. I love Keith's rules, but even the best ruleset can't save this crummy playfield. I really wanted to like this game but it's just not clicking at all.

More ignorance from someone who wasn't even around back then. LOTR was a hit from the get-go - anticipation was high after the success of TSPP, and it lived up to expectations, and got even more popular with code revisions. It got re-released in 2005 due to high demand, only 2 years after the initial run (not "6 or 7").

Great price! If I was local I would grab it!
Shipping holds me back.

Yea, this too... open playfield or not, I'd buy for 6750 if local..

Not a JJP hater at all. Why do we all assume that every game in this hobby is going to go up and keep going up? Anyone who's been in this hobby for 5 years or more (myself included) is pretty damn spoiled. We've essentially been able to enjoy a fun hobby for free (or better!). Not every game will go up. If you haven't seen this game going down in price, you're simply blind or delusional. Whenever I've decided to move a game, I've made sure that I'm the cheapest on the block. When it's time to move on, it's time to move on.

And finally, just because the manufacturers have decided on an 8K price, it doesn't mean that they're 8K games. The market decides that. I've been told that exact thing many times before, that the market determines the price. That principle doesn't apply only when TZ goes from a 3K game to a 7K game in 5 years.

But he made it super deep into the game...all the way to Into the Fire. Takes like 2 minutes to get to if you KNOW the rules. ok maybe 5 minutes to get there.

Either way the Hobbit is a great game when in a home not at show or location. Whoever buys this is getting a great deal!

#29 6 years ago

Wow, great price. This will sell within hours.

Don't know the rules much, and the games were all 20+ minutes, 1M+ except for the last one which ended at 750K and a ball hopelessly jammed into one of the beast popups with ITF lit. Earliest game was LAX 2 years ago so not sure if code existed beyond ITF. Regardless, I could be 33 modes deep with a 4 wizard-mode stack in this thing and that STILL doesn't change the fact this is one of the weakest modern widebody playfields ever designed. Just not fun to shoot IMHO. What would make it fun? Stick the Hyperball Hypercannon where the flippers are and go to town... this playfield is perfect for that kind of game!

He replied and said it was sold in 15 minutes I would expect that it will be listed as sold soon

I couldn't disagree more with the JJP hate. I just had the pleasure of setting up one of these last weekend and am now trying to figure out a way to own one myself. When this game is set up right and running the new code, its an amazing experience.

#35 6 years ago

Amazing deal! Wish I would have seen this earlier for a buddy. Just played mine a while ago. Still a fun game and I got mine NIB.

#36 6 years ago

Are you selling any other machines - let me know - I will come get them.

Especially when they follow it up with G'nR...

#38 6 years ago

Dang, only 40 minutes from me, wish I would have seen it sooner. I would have had to sell my CQ STTNG to get it though, that would not have been fun to part with.

#39 6 years ago

This game is going to be discontinued in a few weeks. Not many were sold at all. Give the market and fans time to calibrate. New code to release even still. Price on this game will rise. It's a special game that is either misunderstood or not even seen by most. Buyer at this price totally stole the pin. Proud owner here.

I thought so as well.

I have plenty of time on the one at the Silverball Museum in NJ, but never really warmed to it. I'd much rather a WOZ.

Quoted from FalconPunch:

Well there were supposed to be 1500 LEs, some of which were changed to Smaug SEs ...it's possible they didn't all sell, though. Often JJP says "limited to #___" ...that doesn't mean they will all be made. If that's the case and they didn't all sell, then perhaps the Black Arrow Edition was a move to invigorate interest and use leftover parts?

Absolutely....it's the best game in years, but suffered from its delays, art changes, movies not being as beloved as LOTR, early code impressions, and gameplay setup at shows.

2000 units would be a flop and a failure compared to WoZ, and who knows if even that many sold. It's all just speculation. Suffice it to say, game was only on the line for 12 months or so tops.

#44 6 years ago

Guess the Black Arrow edition is the truly limited edition.

Actually, the standard stainless is.
Same with WoZ

#46 6 years ago

"Limited" is not how i would describe it and going up in price in the future isn't how i'd look at it either.

Too many great pins coming out down the road. $9k Hobbits will be used to fund those.

Fair deal for both buyer and seller. Congrats.
