This machine was DOA when it arrived in my garage and had its share of issues once I was able to get it to boot up. Here’s what i have done to get it up to snuff…

On the control board, replaced the microprocessor socket and chip, 555 timer (also with a socket) and several transistors. Removed the battery holder and RAM. Replaced with new Ramtron RAM chip (batteries no longer needed).

On the power supply board, replaced a burned header connector, several fuse clips, all capacitors and several fuses. Also installed a new molex harness connector to replace a burned 9-pin IDC connector.

Playfield was torn down to clean, buff, polish and seal. New rubbers and LEDs installed throughout. All solenoids, relays switches and mechanicals were cleaned and adjusted. Replaced 5 coil sleeves and several plunger springs, the manhole solenoid coil, one slingshot bracket, flipper bats, the center triangle plastic, two decals (pizza and manhole cover) and apron scorecards. Also repaired a half dozen or so broken wire connections.

Cabinet is solid and very clean (thanks to Meguiars swirl remover and synthetic sealant). There are a few small scuffs and paint chips but overall a very nice looking cabinet. The back glass/ translite is really, really nice. Parts replaced on the cabinet include the coin door test advance switch, shooter rod springs, speaker, speaker cover and keyless lock on the coin door. Also added green, lighted flipper buttons and a playfield spotlight.

I’ve played quite a few games to ensure everything operates well and reliable. It looks great and plays fast. I never really understood why TMNT is such a popular machine. I had never played one till this project. Now I know why. There’s a lot going on… skill shots, multi-ball, “sewer” with manhole and auto eject, auto fire, that damned spinning pizza that changes the trajectory of the ball, four action figures guarding the playfield (one sitting on top of a dynamic pop bumper cap) and a very nice color scheme enhanced with colored insert LEDs.
