My cheap and effective fix was to cut a square of sticker-backed felt padding and affix it to the top of the screw head. It's not the screw turning that causes the scratching since it stays stationary with the proper hardware. What's actually causing the wear on Bullwinkle's nose is contact damage from the screw head. The felt padding square on mine eliminates that hard contact.
