Item description

I have a Bally Lost World that I picked up in a two machine deal. It may be beyond my limited repair knowledge and skills. So I’m willing to pass it on to someone with more capabilities to bring it back to life.

It’s all there, but currently not functional. No background info because I bought it from a person who was hauling stuff from an estate. I plugged it in and turned it on and some playfield and backbox lights came on. I turned it off and didn’t try anything else for fear of making something worse.

It will need a new backglass. It’s flaking pretty bad on the bottom 1/4. The rectifier board connectors look like they had a problem and someone hacked it to work at some point. The mpu looks like it needs some repair or replacement.

The playfield has some wear spots and touch ups, but it’s not that bad. Cabinet is ok. Inside cabinet and under the playfield looks pretty good. I don’t see any rust or mold or anything.

If I can’t get $600 it will become my learning experience experiment. May trade towards a working late 70’s Bally EM or SS. Old Chicago, Night Rider, Wizard, maybe others.

Full disclosure.

I had two people PM me giving me a hard time because they saw the Facebook marketplace ad from a couple days ago from where I bought the pin.

First, I have never made money on pinball. If anyone has dealt with me buying or selling they know I’m an honest person. I bought this Lost World and a Mata Hari for $800. I had to take a half day off work and drive 6 hours round trip to pick them up. So all in all I have about $1,200 into the two after losing wages and mileage.

Both pins need new backglasses and some repairs. But they will be nice players once working. As of right now I don’t have the experience to repair the pins myself. So I most likely will need to buy new plug and play boards and a cpr backglass. Or pay someone to do the work. So for me, I assume it will cost me maybe $600 each to do myself. So I assume I’ll have probably $2,000 into the pair if I do the work myself. Not bad, but not a steal.

I figured I would post the Lost World because there may be someone out there that has the parts already laying around or more knowledge that could get it back to playing for much less than it will cost me. I have described and posted pictures of the flaws that I can see. I tried to price it fair. Maybe the price is too high? But like I said in the ad, I may just use this pin as my learning project without fear I will completely ruin a working pin. And if the price is much lower, it’s a parts machine. And it’s better than a parts machine.

If there is anyone close to Mansfield that wants to come diagnose the pins and teach me how to do that I would pay someone for their time. Send me a PM. I have read the online support wikis and there really is info out there that can guide me through the repairs. But honestly, I get intimidated when I read don’t touch this because you’ll electrocute yourself or cause more problems.

Thanks, Kevin

Old Bally's are one of the easiest eras of games to work on, not much to them and the wiring is pretty straightforward and tons of existing resources. Usually rebuilding or replacing the rectifier board is where to start (assuming the voltages there are bad) because if your power isn't good you will be chasing ghosts trying to find an issue.

Hard to say without seeing the game but the mpu likely has some battery damage, although it looks like someone clipped the original so you might get lucky.

The connectors and header pins are always a pain point on these games. They usually need replaced, at least all the smaller .100 ones, otherwise like the power you may be seeing weird issues that are just bad connections. Once the power and connectors are clean there is not much to the boards. All boards are available as inexpensive after market options with weebly or alltek and the any issues on lamp and solenoid boards are USUALLY just transistors and easy to replace.

Don't let the pinball morality police bother you. Everyone is jealous when they miss a deal and some people think it "should have been theirs" if they miss it. Well, they missed it and it's yours now. Keep it, flip it, burn it, who cares...its your game now. You don't owe anyone an explanation on what you do with your own stuff.

Seems like a good deal to me.

#5 1 year ago

I agree. Would have been interested if it was close.

It is a good deal if you ask me, but my vote would be just using this pin as a learning experience. I did the exact same thing with my Lost World and learned a lot in the process, you may surprise yourself with what you accomplish

Good deal certified. Don’t listen to the others getting on you.

I have a entire thread here somewhere on the restore that I did on mine. You should keep it and fix her up.

#9 1 year ago

Thanks for the comments. I think you’ve convinced me to keep it and try to learn something about boards and diagnosing problems. Sounds like I should start by replacing the rectifier board and replace some connectors.

The MPU is almost certainly not going to work. I think the ground trace to the U8 ram is completely gone. Check the trace under U8, leading down from the right side of C13, it is looking open circuit.

That said getting it working might end up making the entire thing more valuable. Just ignore the price police. At $600 as it sits, not bad deal no matter what you got it for.

This is a game for people that just want a pin in the house and not really play it a hole lot. It looks great, well the backglass at least, but the gameplay is pretty bad, and i normally love all the bally games. It has to have the worst bonus meltdown in history of pinball. Oh no, i got max bonus! ZZzzzzz while it counts down.

This title is begging for a BSOS revamp. I know mine is.....
