Quoted from ZMeny:

Guys I'm trying to sell it for a fair price given the condition and the unknowns. Does the price of purchase affect the price of sale? Not sure Stern uses the same ratio haha. Lot of interest so far thanks for the replies. Who's gonna pull the trigger?

Ask yourself: can you absolutely guarantee the buyer that a new set of boards will end with the game booting right up and working?

What variables are present? Is the wiring throughout the game intact? Do all the solenoids work? What if the buyer puts all new boards in, powers the game up, and a board or its components fry? Now what?

We don't know the reason these boards were originally removed, but for all of them to be missing would make me wonder.

A potential buyer needs to step back and realize this: you are potentially buying someone else's problems. You are not guaranteed a fully working JD once new boards are installed.

I probably don't know all the details. I am basing my opinion on the information provided and mean no disrespect to the OP, and i am not trying to attack the OP, his character, or his reputation. This purchase has a decent level of uncertainty, and I certainly would want to know that going in.

For what may be a total $2700, I would buy a complete game that powers up, plays, and at worst, has a credit dot.

Quoted from cosmokramer:

Lots of us do this...Nothing wrong with it...If there is something wrong with it please explain it to me.
I saw a Shrek in fantastic condition on CL last week and bought it for 2900...not because I want a shrek, but I will shop it, enjoy it briefly and move it on for a profit.
You wouldn't?

Nothing wrong with making a buck and I have said that multiple times. On the other hand pretending this is anything but a bonehead buy is for chumps.

Quoted from ZMeny:

I take it you're not interested? I think 2700 for a nice dredd with all new boards and a pinsound is a good deal, but hey I buy games without knowing if they work so maybe I'm the ignorant one.

We have talked before and you have tried to trade me on numerous occasions to which I have declined.

You are not offering up a 2700 nice jd. You are offering up a 1500 dollar project of unknown mechanical and electrical condition. I buy plenty of games not knowing if they work too, but I buy them accordingly.

1k for a jd missing boards wasn't a bad deal if you wanted a jd. With some work you can piece together an original boardset for 800-1k, but it can take months to find deals. That way you come in a little under what they are worth in case you find that it wasn't *fully working*.

If anyone is delusional enough to buy this for 1500 will be lucky to break even if not lose a couple hundred. The only *good buy* to be found here is if someone takes it off your hands and you walk away making money off their potential stupidity.

Good point, bad Jeopardy analogy. You don't say "What is..." when picking a question!

Always love your energy and candid thoughts. Appreciate the time brother.

Allow me to offer a different perspective.

Sometimes, when a project game pops up like this, I'll buy it knowing that it might cost me a bit more in the long run.

My reason is simple. I can buy the project, and then over the next few months save up a little at a time to purchase the remaining pieces of the project.

If I have $2,700 saved today for a Judge Dredd, then of course I would rather just buy a nice working Judge Dredd.

But if I only have $1,500 saved today, I have two options now.
Option one is to continue saving $100-$200 a month until I have raised the $2,700 to buy a working JD while also hoping that JD does not increase in price during my saving period.

Option two is buying this project Judge Dredd listed here and slowly buy the rest of the parts over time. I know I'll have a complete Judge Dredd in a few months and I can learn a little in the process.

Maybe I do end up spending $3K for a $2,600 game. But that is $400 spread out over say 6 months. During that time, I learned a little about rebuilding a game from the boards up and I didn't have to wait until I had all the money at once in order to acquire a desired game.

For some collectors like me, the money is long forgotten once the game is working and in its spot in my line up.

So $1,500 for a base game in need of boards may be the only way I get a Judge Dredd in 2017. And if I overspend to get it, I'm okay with that. And there might just be a few other collectors who feel the same way.

Just another perspective.

These discussions crack me up. I was once told by a fellow pinsider "socialist buyers, capitalist sellers"

Think about that for a minute and see how fitting it is to these selling discussion boards.

The discussion board is a simple idea. One has a question that is genuinely interested in purchase, question is answered. There is no need to be a middle man or informant on what something should be priced at. I DO like how it was posted by others what a board set would cost and the alternative options. I don't understand why so many people are concerned somebody might make a buck or two on something they ran down, or the mindset that a seller needs to pass the purchase price paid onto the next buyer.

Anyway, to each their own, free bump. Im curious to what this will sell for.

I honestly don't care if someone knows what I paid or where I got it, either we work out a deal or we don't.

Exactly !! I'm proof of that and it shouldn't ever matter what someone buys a game for, and no these games are not for sale...just some examples of mine and how I don't care if others know. Good luck to the JD seller.

Gotta love the sanctimonious neckbearded free market haters that are just envious or never get out of their parent's basement. It's the only thing that sucks about the pinball hobby. GLWS! Nice buy! Reasonable price!

Quoted for truth. But remember, socialism is good for the people, not the socialists. If these whiners had the game they would be doing the same thing. Hypocrite leftists.

Where are you getting neckbeared free market haters that live in their parents basement? This hobby is so stupidly expensive these days that the basement dwellers don't own machines.

Now don't start insulting us neckbeards. Not all of us are against making a profit reselling a CL bargain.

I love those informative cards Mr. Dayhuff. I may have to do that for my games.

Funny how people squabble over a few Ben Franklins, when we paid hundreds every month on: Cell phones, cable TV, out to dinner/beers...

Quoted from NPO:

Here's the million dollar question: if you did indeed pay $1000 (tops as this is what you claim to have offered the seller, and I don't know the price you paid, so I'll assume you paid what you offered), what makes this game worth your asking price now?

How dare you?!? Never thought I'd see unsubstantiated accusations of bad Jeopardy analogies tossed about so lightly on Pinside, the moderators must be on holiday. Now I was admittedly mixing my game show metaphors -- NPO posed a rhetorical "Million Dollar Question" and I offered a response in the style of Jeopardy. But I was also plainly answering (in the form of a question) a question, not picking a category.

Did you get my offer I sent this morning via text? Didn't get a response.

Sold mine for $2300, but had added a color dmd and shiny gold topper to the game, as well as fixed the lighting matrix issue, and replaced trough opto with the GLM ones, and fixed a few other optos on the game. Congrats on the sale of the pin.

Damn I paid $1500 for mine last year that had boards, prices sure have gone up around here.

So it is a $1500 game when you are buying and prices are crazy around here...

But when you are selling it is a $2300 game, lol. checkmate buddy.

Gotta love the logic and how in your oringinal post you humble brag on your $1500 score as what is supposedly common place. Then reality kicks in that you needed to get a topper, fix a light matrix issue, update trough optos, fix other opto issues, oh and also add a colorDMD.

Yes $800 in parts, and added that to the price I sold for. Seems pretty realistic to me. Didn't need $1000 in boards plus the mystery of discovering if everything then worked. The topper wasn't really needed either, nor were the trough optos, but I liked the idea of updating them to ensure reliability on route. I sold for what I had into the game, not what the OP did here, which I'm also fine with, I've certainly profited off games, not knocking that either.

Like I stated before if you wait you will find deals, not everyone in the hobby is out to get rich on every game they sell.
Yes I absolutely got a deal on the JD when I bought it, and I still think the person I passed it on too also got a deal, this game is missing a least $1800 worth of parts that my game had on it.

I think Xerico point of if you have the $1500 now and can add the other parts later is also an excellent view point.

I would just recommend being decent to people with in the hobby and in the end have some good karma come your way, I certainly think I can say that has happened for me more than a few times now. And a game is worth what someone will pay, I have no issues with someone buying this at that price, or the OP selling it. I also find no harm in me informing potential buyers or sellers of what I paid for the same title a year ago to have fair and accurate pricing listed in the pinside forums.

#83 7 years ago

He seemed to be upfront that he wasn't sure what else was wrong with it. He never lied or made the game out to be more than it is. I would much rather deal with that then an over priced game that I'm told works great and looks good and have to drop hundreds into it. Iv been to look at numerous games like that. If he sold the game to someone for $500and then that game worked with $1200 worth of boards (possibly less depending what someone had around) would someone go back to him and give him the difference in price between that game and market? NO!!!!
