Ive seen and have a number gottliebs, and the only ones that plank were the ones stored poorly (unheated warehouse, unheated garage, damp basement, etc)

Any environment that would be unfriendly to bare wood and artwoek would be unfriendly to a pin.

It's not necessarily a trend for any particular manufacturer. I've seen it happen with different manufactures and games of different ages.
