Game - for sale

For sale: HUO Theatre of Magic Untouched Gorgeous

Added: 2018-11-10 22:02:54 UTC • Ended: December 17th, 2018
Condition: HUO - Undocumented (Home Used Only)

Price

$ 6,300

I hate the term HUO and I never use it. However, this is my first time selling one. This machine is out of a time warp. Came from a large collection and was acquired in 1998. I was told it has less than 1000 plays and I believe it. With the exception of a GI molex connector it is untouched. Original bulbs, rubbers, etc. Look at the shooter lane. The backbox light board, crisp white instructions, the subway is clean, standup targets barely have any wear, the brass on the wireforms is awesome, game is just stunning. Plays great with no credit dot. Ton of literature. This is a collector's dream. I want full disclosure so I am mentioning everything I see wrong below.

The bad: Pics of each.
1. Small blem in back box that was touched up.
2. Trap door bracket has a broken piece. Can be welded or a new one costs $75.
3. Small playfield chip the size of a sliver by trap door. Every TOM I owned had this.
4. Trunk has two hair line cracks.
5. Small chip in translight that is only visible from back. Does not show through front.
6. Small chips on trough hole. Everyone of my Jpop games had this. It is covered by the apron.
7. Needs to be shopped. Rubbers are dry. Game has been sitting unplayed for a while.

When is the last time you saw one like this? I have never had a classic in this condition. ###-###-#### [phone number removed]. Trades considered.

Seems a little odd that the Driver board and CPU have been swapped from a different game. Nice piece none the less, GLWS.

#5 5 years ago

Strange swap on assembly line?

#6 5 years ago

This pin looks like a rare sighting...I might have to try and see it before it's gone since you're local! The boards (and everything else) look so clean that maybe an assembly line worker got a little complacent with installing the boards/stickers...I've certainly seen much worse things come off the line.

Big price drop. Trades considered.

This connector is not original so likely burnt out and was replaced. Instead of repairing the driver board they just did a swap with a different one.

If I had to guess why the CPU board was swapped the machine was likely in a non-collectors home and they had acid damage from not changing the batteries. I owned a few legit HUO machines from the 90's and most came from non-collections who had money and just wanted an expensive toy in their gameroom. Most collectors were not buying NIB machines in the 90's and these people who did really didn't know how to take care of them.

Games still is very nice and I appreciate the fact the OP took so many detailed pictures. Normally people throw up a few shitty pictures and then you are left with a bunch surprises once you receive it (unless you were local and checked it out in person).

#9 5 years ago

Yep, mentioned the connector. If boards were swapped I stand corrected but hell, they are brand new boards. At this point I lowered the price to that of a non-collectors machine. Hell, it wouldn't take much to swap boards back if you really cared about the serial numbers. Game is just stunning. It's the nicest 90's machine I have owned.

Priced right, bump for a nice original game. GLWS

That is a very nice looking TOM. The replaced connector is for the GI circuit on the power driver board, and is not unusual to get toasted and replaced even on a very low use game such as this (mine was similar condition and had to replace it also). The reason for the power driver board itself being replaced could be burnt pins from same connector that someone didn’t want to change, but is anyone’s guess. It’s not from battery acid damage though, as the batteries are on a different board altogether.

If you are referring to my post I didn't associate the batteries with the driver board and stated the CPU board.

Open to offers. Also looking for a Congo if anyone is interested in trading. Will consider other trades.

Just confirmed with the seller that this TOM is the one that I repaired the GI connector on.

The driver board was not swapped due to the burnt GI. The connector was toasty but the header wasn't bad. Still, pins were a little discolored so I put in a new header.

The previous owner and I discussed going with an IDC connector as original or using a connector with trifurcon pins. Trade-off was looking original versus a better connector. He opted for the better connector.

From what I could tell, the game was just a beautiful, unmodified, unrestored example with little wear.

Quoted from Djshakes:

they are brand new boards.

This is a little confusing.

They look like Williams boards, but as far as I know, they haven't made those for around 20 years.

Apparently you never heard of the term NOS. They sure look like it. Someone said they were swapped, if they were, they used new old stock boards. Not sure what your point of trying to nitpick other than typical pinside behavior crapping on threads. Boards look pristine. Not sure what more you want. You could eat off the things.

Whatever interest I might have had in buying another TOM because it was local and looked to be in pretty good shape, just flew right out the window.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the machine. Not in a rush, want the right buyer. It'll happen. It's all timing with these things.

Looks like a very nice TOM, surprised it hasn't already been sold.
