It could be argued that I went too far, spent too much, and expect too much in return, but we’ll let the pinball market decide! Up for sale is a 1986 Williams Comet machine, System 9, fully restored and then some. The story goes like this: around 2006ish, I bought two destroyed Comet machines for $600 in Herndon, VA. I got one cobbled together and over the years, collected the parts to restore both to like-new condition. COVID brought me a window of opportunity, and I was fortunate for time and weather to grind the playfields to their base, and the cabinets – and bring them back up. The playfields are NOT hardtops – when I got the overlays from an artist in CA, Hardtop didn’t exist yet. These overlays are covered in two layers of water-based poly, and then covered again under Mylar.

Both cabinets were repaired and cleaned up, then painted and stenciled with Pinball Pimp kits. Finally, the electronics were gone through and made 100% working condition on my bench – MPUs, power supplies, flipper boards, and sound boards. Every single switch, solenoid, and light was tested and verified. Some of my videos show exactly how I did this, for the curious. From there I put in Wulffpac LED displays, which look original and remove the requirement for high voltage from the power supplies. I also ordered translates and mounted them in new tempered glass. One machine needed an entire coin door (the one for sale). Everything is bulbed – no LEDs in this job. It just came down to cost. LEDs can be added if the buyer wants them, at their cost. Both machines were re-done side by side, so I could save time and manage aspects that can be tricky to figure out, so most resto pics will show both.

I invested in the stuff people need upfront – new FreePlay40 ramps and features, translucent, and sharp. New rubbers, plastics where I could locate them in the world, graphics (Million Point Shot, Dunk the Dummy, Ducks, Rabbits, more) ball guides, and other particulars like new EOS and rebuilt flippers. The harnesses were gone over, every connector, and repairs were made. Every switch and aspect has been tuned for play. There’s even new fabric over the head’s speaker hole.

There are dozens of pics, videos, and details – I’m happy to chat with anyone about how this work was done. There’s a link for a public Google Drive with all the photos and videos, as I will be limited here. I have been restoring machines since 1982 and it is my passion to bring these things back to life. As I don’t need two Comet machines, I would like to move the one (on the right in any pics) along to a new home. I have $1,550 invested in a single machine (see the spreadsheet pic, which has most but not all parts I bought) and who-knows how many hours. Some of the original condition pics are harrowing or just surprising when one sees how far gone these things were. It would take considerable time to pick through the pics and videos, but by all means, have at it!

My restored machines are bullet-proofed, can be played in my home arcade in Leesburg, VA (by appointment only), and I can help move them in the DC Metro for a small cost. I prefer not to ship them, but it can be done – PM me and we can discuss the options. I take Venmo, PayPal, and of course the cash that lands on the glass. I don’t care about price police and the like – post whatever you like – the machine is for sale, plays perfectly, and it could find a new home soon!
