Pinball Magazine that features Mark Ritchie discusses the lightening flippers that ended up on Fish Tales. That game was also designed for regular sized flippers. Williams had a very big buyer of games from France in that time period. When he came stateside to look at FT, he said the regular flippers gave too long of ball times for his market and asked that the center drain be widened. That would have changed design geometry so they compromised with the lightening flippers. They were supposed to be put on export games only, but when the game went to production they left them on domestic games too. This may have been same reason BSD got the lightening flipper treatment. The French distributor might have requested similarly like he did on FT. And as Paul Harvey would say....that is the rest of the story!
PS. This thread has to be the cheesiest marketing effort ever to over price/sell a game in pinball history. Worse than Imamculate Baywatch and even worse than the current Stern Beatles price pimp.
