Upper or lower playfield? Please post some pics so us sys80 fans can drool

#3 9 years ago

Wow ... Yeah just the upper or upper and lower?

#4 9 years ago

Judging by the "just drop in" and the price I would say it is both upper and lower playfields.

How the heck do you find this rare stuff?

#7 9 years ago

We occasionally get access into the Indiana Jones government warehouses....

Sorry, dumb question ... how did the plastics and artwork yellow inside a cardboard box? (Or is there a yellow tint to the pics?)

I agree with you, the PLAYFIELD looks like it was used before. There is slight wear around the inserts and BAD cracking/planking of the Playfield.

It's just age.

We opened the factory box. There are zero plays on this thing. The condition it is in is NOS. It's still 30 years old, but there has never been a ball rolled across it. It's not being advertised as anything beyond new old stock which is it.

Ok cool, thanks for the info.

I need to find out where that place is.

wow, pretty negative remarks off a few crappy pics. its really not BAD cracking for something that is 30 years old. if someone needs real pics or want to make offer I am reasonable. I thought someone could use this that is why I got it. if not, no biggie..

I believe the flame retardant additive oxidizes over time.

Unless you vacuum sealed them or put them in an inert atmospheric environment, they will always yellow.

Lower PF pictures.

No not negative, just my own personal observations. NJGecko explained it to me, all is good. If you really want a negative comment, 30 years or not I have seen Black Holes that have had many plays with little to no cracking of the Playfield. Now that was a negative comment for sure.

Discoveries such as this make me smile every time I read about them. Someone is going to be able to save a cosmetic wreck or improve an existing game.

Either way, it's a win for pinball.

Good luck with your sale!

Lower playfield looks fantastic!

#20 9 years ago

It's all good folks...

It's up for grabs...lots of interest so far.

And, worst case, it gets tucked away for a while as a unique find.

#21 9 years ago

better pics I don't see the yellowing in person, I think the camera is doing it. doesn't really looked planked either. the paint has some imperfections

Hmmmm, it's weird what a camera can do. The PLAYFIELD looks brand new and perfect in those pics. Now that's a good looking Playfield!

#23 9 years ago

yeah those pics make it look pretty awesome!

I don't even know where to start.

Polymer chemistry and pinball manufacturing processes have made leaps and bounds since the early 80's. Take a look at the differences in clearcoat now versus then, or look at the plastic inserts or ramps. Expecting something 35 years old to look equivalent, or even similar, to a modern day Stern or a diamondplated WPC machine is unrealistic.

Good indicators of playfield wear on a machine from this era would be ball swirls and bare wood showing. The signs you are pointing out are more or less signs of a machine being built in 1981 with 1981 parts and processes.

Furthermore, planking isn't even really a symptom of playfield wear, it's more indicative of a flawed curing or application process than an indication of the number of plays. If it were anything related to number of plays, then the Dr. Who and BSD SP and LS playfields would be more or less equivalent after all these years, and that's not the case.

This seems like it is in really great shape compared to other NOS populated playfields from this era. The metal parts/mechs are good indicators of the lack of moisture/humidity that it has been exposed to during storage. For an idea of how a poorly stored NOS playfield looks from this era, seek out the Space Invaders NOS playfield thread.

Also, I'm an objective third party, but Gwaxt has the patience (and prices) of a saint for putting up with that. He's one of the most ubiquitously honest and fairly priced sellers on this forum. He and Eabundy are in a league of their own. Please, if not for the sake of yourself than for the sake of everyone else in the hobby, be kind and respectful to them so that they stay around!

what a kool find !

#26 9 years ago

It definitely shows its age but it will look amazing after some cleanup and new clearcoat work. Nice opportunity for someone.

Ummmm, yeah. Thanks for the explanation but I think it was already put to bed

Planking is normal for a NOS playfield of that age.

The wood fibers expand and contract with changes in temp and humidity.

A little sanding and a new clearcoat will make that an impressive centerpiece for somebody.
