Game - for sale

For sale: Addams Family Gold (Special Collectors Edition), T

Added: 2020-04-25 03:42:58 UTC • Ended: June 3rd, 2020
Condition: Fully shopped/refurbished

Price

$ 11,500

I'm listing this with 95% certainty that I'm ready to let it go, as a lot has gone into this game and it has been special to me for some time. It is probably one of the nicest Addams Families out there. This is Addams Family Gold #981. It was produced on the last day they ran the Gold in 1994. It was an American distributed model that was bought by an operator new and then has been in my home collection for 6 years.

It has had less than 600 plays since I have owned it. When I got it in 2014, the following was done:

- New Plasma Dot Matrix Display installed
- Power Driver Board gone through completely
- Tore down fully to the bare playfield and shopped and LEDed
- New gold pop caps
- New gold bookcase
- Legs, bolts, lockdown, shooter, wireforms and side rails plated by Mike Chestnut (right before he passed)
- New White rubbers and star posts installed
- Cliffys installed
- New clear ramp installed
- New Thing Hand
- New up kicker assembly in the back that kicks out from Thing.
- All flippers rebuilt
- NOS translite installed to replace one with minor imperfection
- Scoop light mods added for the scoop (red) and swamp (green)
- New topper case and blue topper lighting added
- Purple super bands on all 4 flippers

Since then, the following things have been done and mods added:

- Various decals throughout including backboard decal
- Gold Balls added
- New Rottendog MPU added
- Fester mod added
- Knight mod added
- Train mod added
- Bear mod added
- Target decals added
- 3 magnet fuses added

The playfield is perfect, pretty much a 10/10. There are no broken plastics. All boards are clean, it plays 100%. Unfortunately, I do not have the original certificate. However, the plate is there and serials match. The side rails I did not put on from Mike as the originals were not bad and I was worried about damaging the cab, but I do have them and they will go with the game.

The cabinet is solid and overall nice, not perfect, but very nice. The worst part of the cabinet in my opinion is the coin door is a little scuffed, but I have an NOS Williams coin door I'll let go with it. I have a couple other TAF mods that will go with it too (phone, limo, etc.). There is one plastic that has a very minor abrasion on it, a new piece of that plastic is in the coin box. Gold manuals will be included.

Let me know if you have any questions or want more detailed photos of anything, I know it is a large investment. For any very serious collectors, Chris Hutchins is about 45 minutes from me. I'm always happy to drop a game at his place if he agrees to take it on for you. Hard to let this one go, but want to free up some funds, have some other things I’d like to buy, and it is time for someone else to enjoy it.

It has been played in the past 26 years. I will make that caveat. But, wouldn’t call this bad shooter lane wear. You sit there and wank it looking at the wood in the shooter lane generally?

I’ll get more pics up momentarily.

Sorry if I’m rash above, but whining about shooter lanes is a pet peeve of mine, especially when they’re not worn out. If you don’t have anything nice to say about the game, just move on. This is why I rarely get on Pinside much anymore, but it is still the largest audience to sell a machine.

Appears to be a nice machine. Shame the certificate is gone. They definitely built the playfields better on the gold editions, the mansion area held up 100x better on them. Shooter lane doesn't look that bad to me, nothing a little novus and a piece of mylar couldn't solve and protect.

#14 3 years ago

It looks great to me! If I was in the market for a TAF I’d be on my way up!

Yea, I wish I had the certificate for sure. I could maybe reach back out to the op. He said he had it somewhere but I didn’t want to hassle him about it. If it is important enough to a buyer, I’ll see what I can do.

There’s a marked difference in these playfields for sure from 92 to 94, I’m guessing a different manufacturer between the two, as you very rarely see the mansion wear and magnet burn on these like the originals. The colors I think are a little more vibrant as well, especially in the middle.

Thanks for your comments on the shooter lane. I just woke up and saw the above and shooter lane comments are a pet peeve of mine so got too flustered. I care about playfields and everything else but I’ve never seen the shooter lane argument. Just seems petty if you plan to play the game. It happens, it’s pinball, and agree, my personal opinion is this one is very minimal. If it bothered anyone, could easily be buffed or lightly sanded out. It’s not a hull or heavy wear by any stretch.

Novice question.

Is there any difference between Gold Edition and Special Edition that is Gold?

#18 3 years ago
Quoted from cpr9999:

Not sure what you mean, there has only been two Addams made. A regular edition in 1992, and Gold edition in 1994 of which only 1,000 were produced. There were quite a few differences in the two, along from the playfield being made from a different manufacturer and slight differences in the color (rug pattern is different, and greens are darker on gold PF), various gold accented PF items, trim, cabinet art, etc. Plaque and certificate were also issued with matching numbers on the gold edition. I have one close in number to the one for sale, and looked for over a year to find a domestic one like this. Only 900-1000 were made for the US, the rest were manufactured for export overseas.

On the addams, I kinda consider 3 different versions.

Original blue lightning version that you usually see out there

Then, at the very end of this run they made some standard Addams games with gold lightning. These were standard games, but people try and sell them as golds. They are not. Have the same PF and PF colored caps and bookcase. Silver side rails, again it’s a standard Addams in all regards except the cabinet has gold lightning. But they are actually the most rare version. Not sure on production numbers. You can almost make one of these into a gold, but it won’t have the plaque on the lower right of the cabinet. This is the give away. Most of these standard Addams with a gold cabinet have been dressed up to look like a gold. But again, they are standard production Addams. I am guessing somewhere between 200 and 500 were made this way.

And lastly, IMO, best game ever made. TAFG. Exactly 1,000 of these made

When the Addams that broke some record for games built came down the assembly line. It and every cabinet after had the gold lightning. Originals and TAFG.

#22 3 years ago

Yep, agree that after the record was broken the cabinets were all gold. But only the last 1,000 were official TAFG games. Gold cabinet standard Addams that were not in the last 1,000 were not TAFG Special collectors editions. These in between games did not have the extra ball buy in button, came with standard TAF software, had silver rails, colored pop bumper caps and blue bookcase base, standard color apron and chrome wire form cross ramp.
In fact there were a few Addams built with a gold lightning lower cabinet and a blue lightning upper head, I assume this had to be a mistake from the factory, but they got out. I have not seen one of these in a while though.

I have TAFG 300 on my collection that will never leave. I also have a gold cabinet standard Addams right now that has not been modified at all, still all original style colored components. Not dressed up like a fake gold

Some playfields were made by Sun Process, others by Lenc-Smith. Easiest way to spot differences is in the carpet going into the left ramp and in festers head and the mansion. There’s simply more detail in Sun Process playfields, and richer colors. Lenc-Smith Playfields have blue shadowing in festers head, and the carpet detail is washed out almost entirely.

Your game clearly has a Sun Process playfield. Really beautiful example as well. Good luck!

That's a tough one, because it's not an item you can buy after the fact if it's missing. If it were the owners manual, they are expensive but they can at least be purchased, unlike the certificate.

When you pay 5 figures for a machine, some folks are funny about missing documentation. Some folks don't care about it though, so that person would be a buyer here. I do believe that if it had the cert it would be gone quick. There are buyers out there for it regardless. It's a popular machine, I'm thankful to own one.

Quoted from cconway84:

I don’t have the certificate for mine and It doesn’t bother me at all.

For me it all about the machine and it’s condition.
There are several things you can look at on the actual game to tell if it’s real or not without needing a piece of paper to reinforce that.

#30 3 years ago

I agree that you could go either way on the certificate. On a game with more wear I think it matters less. On games in better condition at the top of the market getting top prices I think it matters more. I have a tafg with the certificate. If gold manuals go for $200 and the certificate can’t be bought since it is serialized to the game I think the certificate on a 12-15k top quality gold is worth at least 1k.

#31 3 years ago

Too add to the fun. They have some differences. Some have all the signatures. Some are missing signatures.

#38 3 years ago

Mine is missing a few signatures also.

Seems different signatures are missing On each for some reason.

I know it would not be original, but probably not that hard to make a very close looking fake on these. IMO, the value is in the game, not a piece of paper they put inside.

Not that hard to scan one in and change the number. I know, I know.

Agreed personally. To each their own, I think the plaque is the more important of those two pieces for sure.

Speaking of, I have the certificate for a lord of the rings le that came with a load of parts I got. Can’t remember the number, would have to check, and happy to give the cert to whoever has the game if we could sync up.

#42 3 years ago

Throwing it out there, but I would be open to certain trades plus cash. Prefer just a straight sale, but if someone had a Champion Pub, TSPP, Pinball Magic, maybe Diner plus cash, I'd consider it strongly.

#43 3 years ago

I have to disagree. TAFG is an actual collector's item, an LE before the era of LE's. This is an LE of what I believe is the most important pinball machine of all time as TAF laid the groundwork for every game that would follow (rules, modes, toys, etc.), even almost 30 years later. I don't know how much value the certificate adds, but it's an important piece to the whole package of this very collectible machine.

Since the game only had 600 plays when you took delivery, why would you install a Rottendog CPU? I've never been impressed with their quality...the B/W CPU boards have always been rock solid for me over the years. What happened to the original board?

The original board I got when I got the game was decently corroded, all down in the resistor/capacitor banks under the chips. It would have been a load of work to fix properly. When I received and was going through, I band aid fixed it (neutralized, removed the logic chips needed etc but didn’t properly do it) and the board lasted about 4 years. It started finally acting up and I replaced with the rottendog.

I work on games for a living. The original board to do right was worth more than the $150 for a replacement. That’s why I went that route in the end but delayed the inevitable.

I don’t mind WPC logic replacements from Rottendog. I’ve used to no issue many times. I’m much less impressed with their driver boards, I always repair originals of those. Their combo boards (system 11s) I’ve had some issues with in the past too but their latest 9/11 rev has been acceptable the few times I’ve used.

That all being said, since this is a high dollar game, I can put an original clean WPC89 CPU in for the Rottendog if it is important to whomever purchases.
