I was running the "all lamps" test yesterday on Fish Tales and the capacitor at C2 on my FlipTronics board exploded and smoked.

I just wondered *Why* it might have exploded...

I was afraid to leave it in the machine, although many folks seem to think C2 is not absolutely necessary, and just ordered a replacement board from RottenDog, but for my own personal edification I'd like to know what might have gone wrong...

Any input greatly appreciated. TIA

Because it was done. Caps just fail sometimes. They are only intended to last for around ~10 years - but we often get much more than that.

C2 is not needed. You can just desolder it. Just make sure you flow some solder in the holes to make sure you get continuity from 1 side of the board to the other.

I know this has nothing to do with OP's game, and johnwartjr is indeed the man, but I just want to add for posterity that BSD is one exception that actually seems to need the C2 cap. The right gate coil uses the "upper left flipper hold" power from the board, and if C2 isn't present, the gate doesn't stay open long enough for the mist ball to enter from the left.

Well, that's interesting. Sometimes C2 isn't even stuffed. Odd.
C2 filters the 50V flipper power when present. But at only 100uf, it's not filtering much.

Yeah, I can't say I really understand it, but adding the cap fixed my BSD, and several others on Pinside and RGP have confirmed that it fixed theirs as well.

Thanks for the note. When I get my BSD back up and running, I'll have to swap in a board that doesn't have C2 and see if I note the same behavior. Good to know.

Thanks all for the replies, I de-soldered C2 and made sure that the through hole connection was good, put it back in the machine and it is fine. Now I have an extra Fliptronics board for backup.

Very, very old thread but Kevin is spot on....

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/bsd-mist-gates-issue

My board was missing that C2 cap and as soon as I replaced It my issue was resolved. I haven't had a mist gate issue since than.

I know I digging up an old thread but I just found that this same capacitor (C2) is needed for WCS94 and Williams Indiana Jones. I installed a high quality low ESR 100uF 100V capacitor.
