This is on 1964 Williams Heat Wave.

The right flipper would occasionally stick. I took the assembly apart enough to remove the plunger. Cleaned it, filed it down a little where it was rough around the end that hits the strike plate & cleaned the inside of the sleeve with alcohol and paper towel. It certainly feels smoother and faster. But now it won't hold the weight of the ball.

What'd I do wrong & how do I fix it?

Did you tighten the bolts that hold the flipper shaft on the flipper mech? If those are not tight enough, the flipper bat can slip. Also, some flipper bat shafts have dimples that the bolts sit into, maybe you missed those?

I didn’t loosen the bat. Just took removed the coil & worked on the plunger. It’s not that the bat is loose- the coil doesn’t have the power it had.

I would suspect that the end of stroke switch contacts are dirty or miss adjusted. It sounds like only the hold section of the coil is working.

One of the contacts on the switch is loose. Maybe cleaning it removed the grime that was holding it in place, and now it no longer has a good contact with its blade. I’ll check the alignment and see if I can tighten up the contact.

Solder the contact in place. Readjust the EOS switch.

Inspect the EOS switch. Very likely that is the problem if the shaft itself hasn't worked loose.

Solved. Needed adjustment. I thought the switch was closed but it wasn't.
