I just fixed this on my Jurassic Park last week. Diode was broken loose from vibration. From what I have read, the residual voltage left behind after the coil’s magnetic field collapses leaves the TIP120 transistor energized that controls the hold power. When the diode is present, it allows the current to circulate back through the coil until it dissipates and leaves 0v at the transistor gate.
