Old thread I know, but I had a similar issue. My problem was the bulb was about shot and had a low rapid flickering. I replaced the bulb with a linear strobe tube from Electronic Goldmine ($1.79 but extends a little outside the shroud), but bulb would still flicker fast and try to go supernova until I shut it off. My causes were connector J4 on the lamp driver board, pins 3 and 4 pads were being bridged with a tiny spec of solder.
The other issue was the connector at pins 7 and 8 on the Strobe assembly - I could push on the wires and trigger the strobe. I re-flowed the solder on the header pins and adjusted the tension of the 2 trifurcon connectors and the strobe worked fine after. Hope that helps.
