Issue:. Game boots fine, but start button did nothing.

In test mode, I find the start button is constantly activating. I snip the diode and it stops.

I'm not sure what the spec is, the manuals weren't as detailed back then. Can I just use any old 2n400x diode as a replacement here?

Looks like a 1N4148, but can be replaced with a 1N4001 or similar.

The diode is in series with the switch and cutting it proves nothing unfortunately. You would have the same effect if you cut the wire off. There is a short or another problem.
