We've got a LW3 with the wiring harness cut about a foot or so from the playfield. We can map the wires. However, we will need to extend the wiring and fix it. What's the best way to go forward? Try to find a harness to splice in? Recreate the ends with new wire/connectors?

I'd probably add connectors to the wire ends vs reconnecting each individual wire.

I'd find a comparable harness and match up the colors if possible.

I'd solder the individual wires and heat shrink and cable tie. To reduce new connectors in line with the wiring. To eliminate potential issues later on.

Order new wire that matches and replace the wire completely with new connectors. No splices, make it all new. Or, like Chris stated, put on new connectors if they will reach. Me personally, I don't like to splice, but if you you must, do it correctly.

    That would be the best.

Unless I move the boards to the bottom cabinet, it's too short for connectors. I was thinking of splicing and heat shrinking each wire, but it sounds like that is not the suggestion. Is it because of a chance for overheating or something?

splicing and heat shrinking is fine.

Many consider it a "HACK" and many do it wrong. I have fixed many a game in my lifetime with supposedly "quality" splices and let me tell you, masking tape is not an acceptable covering over solder. Lol

Buy the correct gauge wire, heat shrink tubing, splice together, put new connectors on, buzz out for continuity and you should be all good to go. Be the easiest job you do on that game.

Indeed, that was the plan. Pics will probably end up in the horror thread. But this beast isn't quite dead yet...

I just hate seeing all those splices heat shrinked together, or worse, insulated with electrical tape. That's just me...and I know that I am a perfectionist.
Additional connectors won't add reliability issues if done correctly.

As it happens, it will be more interesting eventually.

Heat shrink splices suck but it could be worse.
The 'Best' type of spice by far is simply wires twisted together and wrapped in electrical tape that is 20+ years old. Always accompanied with the sticky, gooey gunk that gets all over everything including your fingers. It sticks to everything but magically no longer sticks to the splice.
