Quoted from northerndude:

Nice walleye!!
My bud caught a 10lber last night. I got skunked today.
Although, the most I’ve ever marked on the flasher. They just wouldn’t bite, I must not be on the cycle

Thanks brother! I’m stoked that’s my PB it was a hair over 29”. What a beast. Came in suspended at 12’ seen it on the hummingbird, reeled up and it was on.The smaller one was 24”. Same here for marks though most wouldn’t bite. Got a few perch, lots of Cisco’s, and a slimy burbot as well.

I need to rebuild ice fishing traps.
Where are you getting supplies online?
Looking for replacement parts
Any recommendations on good fishing line for traps?

Traps? Tip ups maybe?

Tip ups

#105 3 years ago

I use Beaver Dam tip ups. They have a website and sell parts/lube etc. Not sure if too many other brands have the same. A lot of Beaver Dams have been around for close to 50 years. They are the ones to get, imo. You can take apart, maintain, and have free spooling in the coldest of weather. That’s the most important part of a tip up. Finding old ones at garage sales are like hitting a little lotto for ice fisherman. They’ll last a lifetime and can be passed down.

Another story..

I usually out-fish most guys, but it’s mostly because I keep my line in the water longer. Long casts, slow retrieves, and not taking breaks. Just putting in the work.
Well I had a guy in the boat getting frustrated, he wasn’t catching them. He wanted to switch his lure to what I was using, so I gave him one.
That didn’t work, so he figured that I was in the front of the boat cherry picking spots. I let him take my seat. Still no deal. I was also explaining to him that I use polarized sunglasses that help see the structure under the water etc, and that is something important. So now he’s using my lure, sitting in my seat, with my glasses on.. and he has a follow..he’s getting ready to set the hook..and the fish pops it’s head out and says, “Hey, you’re not Dave!”

Quoted from Deaconblooze:

I've caught a bunch of those. I started seeing them 20 years back in door county. We had a DNR warden hang out with us for a while when we pulled one in. He called it a "goby" at the time. Said they were an invasive species and aggressively pursue bass eggs (maybe all eggs, but we were targeting smallies at the time). He told us to leave them on shore.
It's been a long time since I've seen one, but I also havent fished anywhere north of the dells in years now.

Gobies have spread rapidly on the St. Lawrence River as an invasive species. When they first showed up everyone was told to kill them if you catch them because they are eating the bass eggs. After a few years of them being around, everyone started to notice how much bigger the smallies were getting. Turns out the bass have been gorging themselves on the gobies. The past 5+ years the fishing has been really good on parts of the St. Lawrence.

I don't fish for walleye very often especially once they move to deeper water, but my son caught this one while we were fishing in about 15 feet of water on the St. Lawrence. I was certain I was going to knock it off while netting it. 26 inches 6.5 Lbs, not huge for up there, but I've never caught one remotely that big.
Case 26 Inch 6.5 Lbs Walleye (resized).JPGCase 26 Inch 6.5 Lbs Walleye (resized).JPG

This is the small mouth he caught the year before, 4.5 Lbs. Apparently I didn't document the length, but I think it was around 20-21 inches.

Bull sharks go pretty hard too. We used to always have a shark line out the back in season. The rule was if it was my size or smaller it came home for dinner. We had a process where even when i was fishing alone, no sharp bits came in the boat. It involved two gaffs and a folding pruning saw.

This one was just larger than me and lived to fight another day.
