This was probably done because that switch is often problematic and the original wireform will hold the ball there in place, forcing you to shake the machine to release the ball. It is most often replaced with a magnetic switch or a proximity sensor with a relay (its what I replaced mine with and its been a bliss). I'd be curious to see the way it was setup in your machine.
