We got a Fish Tales last week and it was working okay (bar the wrong slingshot rubbers) until yesterday.

It’s now showing the Ball 1 Lock animation almost constantly and the reel is spinning, despite there not being a ball anywhere in the Caster’s Club mechanism.

Any suggestions on what we should look at for debugging the problem?

Run your switch test first. There are several switches associated with the reels and monitored by the opto switch board. Non working or stuck on switches will usually confuse the game as to what is locked and what isn't, and it sounds like the reel is continuously spinning because the game cannot interpret the wheel position. The first switch test is the edge test - operate the switches manually to monitor switch closures, the second test is the switch levels test which cycles through and shows all switches that are closed.
