Hey guys, I'm new here and looking to start a collection of pinball machines (something I have always wanted and now have the opportunity to get). I happen to be an avid Estate Sale customer in the ATL area and recently saw a post of four machines that look to be in FANTASTIC condition. I'm especially interested in Terminator 3 and Twilight Zone. T3 has the gun trigger and is actually signed by the designer. TZ also looks to be in fantastic condition.

The machines are listed on an auction site and I have booked an appointment to see the machines in person. I just wanted to reach out on these forums to see what you guys think / see if you have any advice on what to look for. I'm worried my excitement may distract me from paying close attention to any issues. This may sound goofy, but is there any kind of basic checklist that I should be going through? I'm certainly not qualified to diagnose mechanical issues and just hoping for some advice. You can see the machines at this website: auctions.certifiedestatesales.com (lot# 650, 580, 680, and 800).

They look clean. If you can turn them on, check for a credit dot, and play a game, that will tell you a lot.

If you don't get a chance to play them or turn them on... Well you're flying blind.

There are issues that even a long time pinball tech could miss, boards that have subtle and flaky problems are one.

At the end of the day once you become a pinball owner you also become a pinball tech! It helps to start with games that aren't completely broken but you will definitely start running into problems even if these games are all perfect. It's just the nature of the beast.

Here is an actual checklist:
http://www.pleasureandpinball.se/buylist/checklistbuypinballeng.pdf

They look really nice and well taken care of, but since it's an estate sale they might have sat for some time?
The thing I would look for is old leaky batteries.

You sound awfully attached to these machines and that’s a bad place to be in an estate auction!

As long as you aren’t expecting this endeavor to be cheap it’s a nice little instant collection. Expect the games will need a little work / tweaking like all found home collections, and expect this deal to end up being quite expensive, and you’ll be ok.

If you’re new to pinball why not look at all the new offerings from Stern. Call your local distributor and at least you will pay a fair market price.

Who's to say this guy isn't a part of the group that is selling these. I get a sense that they are posting for the exposure. Not a bad idea however if that's the case. Now you have more competition.

In todays market who is going around sharing links to great deals? The good shit gets snatched up so quickly that only a complete noob (like they say they are) or someone intending to promote the sale would share it.

My guess is it's the seller/auction company posting.......for a $35 Pinside contribution he posts this ad to a buncha nerds who actually buy these things.

As a first time buyer, you’re better off buying a new in box pinball machine. Jason owns a local pinball distribution company and can sell you a new pinball machine.
https://www.classicgamerooms.com/component/contact/contact/1-classic-game-rooms.html

Jason will be bringing 42 new in box pins to a local Atlanta game convention called SFGE. You can call him and prepay for a pinball machine. You’ll get a show discount and he’ll unbox it at the show, and allow the public to play it. At the end of the show you take it home. It might have 400 plays on it. If you ask Jason will probably deliver it to your house and set it up for you.

I’m always in disbelief when this pins are set right next to windows?

Most of the pics posted in this thread aren't in the actual auction listings. They could have only come from someone onsite & affiliated with the company. LOL. Considering lampshade34 just signed up on pinside 2 days ago and this was a first & only post... yeah, it's the auction house drumming up interest and bids. Has to be Lee... you dirty dog?! LOL ...Smart move. More views = more bids.
