Ok here it is in all its glory. It is absolutely filthy. I turned it on and I get GI, the DMD sometimes flickers, and I sometimes here a bongo drums sound. Other than that nothing. I barely cleaned it with Windex and Novus 2 just to get an idea of what we are looking at here. The cleaned off playfield isn't nearly as vibrant as the colors suggest in photo. Most of the metal is rusted for now. Give me some opinions.

The batteries were taken out immediately.

Quoted from skquinn:

but the DMD is quite possibly toast and may need replacement. Check the connectors for continuity (actually, for visible damage as well). Once the connectors are known to be good, any remaining issues have to lie within the boards.

The DMD only flickers but I do believe it is toast.

Quoted from Rob_G:Isn't it going to be hard to get the smoke smell out of it?

Rob

I was driving and saw a burned down house and thought, this must be the place. I was looking at the game in the barn and I could not smell anything. It turns out it was from a fire several years back, so no smell.

Quoted from Whistles:

What was your cost basis on this? Seem to find these easily for less than 2k lately and I could see someone putting in close to that in time and parts etc...to get this back to even playable. Just judging by the melted batteries you may have damage to those PCB's that you might not even be able to see externally.

...$25

Quoted from NJGecko:

Also wondering your cost on this and your ultimate goal...is this a keeper?
It's not a super collectible title, so you could very easily be into this for more than you would ever get out of it...

This is actually the only Stern game I have ever enjoyed but I never really got a whole lot of play time on it. I wouldn't call it a keeper yet but I am also not ready to call it quits yet.

Thank you, I was looking for this thread.

Are the boards still within warranty?

#21 9 years ago

Glad to see there is hope! What did you use to clean the plastics? I think the hardest part for me is probably going to be the rust on all the metal. This has been in an open barn for years and has a lot of rust from the humidity here.

How do I clean off a DMD?

#29 9 years ago

Okay, I got the flippers to the slingshot broke off tonight. I cleaned with novus. I didn't have the alcohol or scrubbing bubbles (I am a bachelor and live as such). I was fairly unimpressed with the results, in one of the photos under where the apron is supposed to be, you can see what I am talking about. I just cant seem to get the vibrancy back. Will the other methods really make that much of a difference? Also, the third from last photo, you can see where a washer was and the difference in blues.

I had some nastly clear plastics (there are a ton on this game) I decided since repros are available, I would try flame polishing.... nope repros it is. That clear plastic got heavily damaged by the smoke but the actual plastics aren't AS bad, I hope I can get to where I am satisfied with them but I know I will end up buying a set down the line. Someone as anal as me should not take on something like this.

#32 9 years ago
Quoted from boagman:

Oh, please. Just keep repeating "This cost me $25" in your head over and over again, and your anal-retentive twitch will be sated.

All I can do is promise to try.

#34 9 years ago

Haha, I wish I could let go as easily as that. I was offered $200 but I love having more projects than I can handle I guess. To get this, I had to get the Turkey Hunting USA as well. Free to any home, doesn't even have to be a good one.

#35 9 years ago

Has any body ever made their own photos for this game. I got a couple of playmates I like a lot better than the ones offered. Just trying to figure out what type of material would work best. Also, still wondering how to clean a DMD. Not sure how water will react with this.

#37 9 years ago

Mike, this is one your whole family can enjoy! Your wife would let you put it in the living room.

#39 9 years ago
Quoted from urbanledge:

you could try clean the PF with 1600 wetsand paper.
I mean the lightest of a rub to loosen the black shit!

I believe I have some actually. I could try it by the apron tonight.

#41 9 years ago

Thanks again, Ken. What's your thoughts on the new photos?

#44 9 years ago
Quoted from PIN_GROOM:

Damn. I just noticed where you are and thought...wonder if he wants to sell it for dirt cheap, then I saw this.
Oh well.
Like I need another project of that magnitude anyway.

Awesome, another Evansville guy. There's not too many of us. I'll send you a PM.

Here is the update. The alcohol worked amazing. Very happy with the results. I spent too much time piecing it back together tonight....not enough photos I guess. I might need some photos later on. I got several of pieces out of the EvapoRust and it looks good. I got another section off tonight. This game had a lot of mechs that are making me nervous taking it apart but gotta fight through it. Here are some photos

20140819_212224.jpg20140819_212224.jpg 20140819_220310.jpg20140819_220310.jpg 20140819_220312.jpg20140819_220312.jpg 20140819_220318.jpg20140819_220318.jpg 20140819_212210.jpg20140819_212210.jpg 20140819_225837.jpg20140819_225837.jpg 20140819_225819.jpg20140819_225819.jpg 20140819_225810.jpg20140819_225810.jpg 20140819_225715.jpg20140819_225715.jpg 20140819_225711.jpg20140819_225711.jpg 20140819_225702.jpg20140819_225702.jpg

Quoted from KenLayton:

Wow, that lower area of the playfield is cleaning up quite nicely! The ball trough metal pieces look great!

Couldn't agree more, thanks again for all your help. I am getting into the complicated parts so hopefully we can get through that. Putting together the ball trough was tough. The switches it uses are held by tiny screws that were brittle due to the rust. I had two break off so I would like a link if anyone has one. Tomorrow I'll be putting the book nack together. Can someone please take a photo of the coil that pushes it open. I forgot to and when I realized it was too late.

#48 9 years ago

Thanks. I was just working on the beaded curtain part and couldn't get the posts to move. I couldn't figure out why the posts were attached to coils and found out that they are magnets. How cool! I've got to get this game running.

Okay, back in action. Pictures are in no particular order. Don't ask me how I ended up on this section of the game. It just seemed like these pieces were attached so I just went with it. Tonights task is going to be one of the ramps.

I have been surprised with EvapoRust. As you can see in the last couple of photos, it eats rust but not decals. Its the same with plastic on plungers and with rubber on brackets. Really awesome stuff. I am most pleased with the magazine and the bunny VUK

No nudity (thank God!), just two choices: stupidity or stupendous!
He once appeared on the David Letterman show and did one of those 'Stupid People Tricks' things.
It's awesome. I've seen it in person. A handful of Quarters and a nose. I'll leave it at that!
Mike

Haha cat's out of the bag now. And it was Jay Leno but it is a true story.

#71 9 years ago

Some of the parts are not going to be able to clean off, so I bought this paint. Example is the white spotlights are orange from damage.

And pin_groom, my threads are a free for all. Especially when Mike gets on.

Ok fellas, I've got about 11 hours into the project and I'm a bit tired. I decided to get last nights progress put back on except for the ball guide. I also accidentally knocked off one habitrail so I figured I might as well start scrubbing it. I did not scrub it with the switches on it. Also sprayed the spotlights a bit. They were ruined anyways so I figured I'd do something fun to start it off. My battery ran too low for a flash shot of the beaded curtain but it does look really good!

Travis, you go fix your pinbot and don't worry about my shortcuts

Tonights update... I used magic erasers for the first time. In one of the photos, the playmates on the left were magic erased and the ones on the right were just alcoholed. I got the spinning triangle removed and the right ramp.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

$25 was a great deal. Looks like it's coming along great. might have to do custom cabinet art, as i've never seen any available for this machine.

Thanks CaptainNeo, I really appreciate the encouragement. I plan on down the road making my own artwork. I'll get one of my favorite Playmates laying down on each side, maybe some good side-boob for the backbox. I also plan on making my own girls for the centerfold, peepshow etc. I am more of a natural breast kind of guy.

A lot of people have been asking me why I am cleaning before repairing.

1. Dirty playfields malfunction, I am trying to rule that out.
2. I am tired of my hands being black from touching my game.
3. Its easier to look at.
4. In the event that I can't get it running, I have a decently shopped populated playfield to sell or hang up if no buyers

Quoted from Berq:

I used those once to clean marker off my son's bedroom door once. Took the finish from eggshell to matte. Now I get to repaint the door. Hope they're kinder to screen prints and clear coats...

Same thing here, I waxed afterwords and it looked better. Another coat of wax and I can call this thing 'practically HUO' (completely kidding, making fun of some for sale ads I've seen on here recently)

Quoted from PIN_GROOM:

I have an industrial shot blaster, compressor, and an oven we occasionally bake parts in at work if you want to try your hand at powdercoating.
Might not be worth it for just a one time thing though.
It's been a while since I looked into the specifics of it, but I don't think it's a HUGE thing to do.

I actually have a friend with a powder coating business here near me. He does a lot of my work. I am mainly focused on getting it cleaned and running then I will be attempting to bullet proof this stuff.

#87 9 years ago

Well I installed before I took photos but take a look. The right side is done. I managed to lose 2 screws on this part. Keep in mind that the clear plastics are shot. So imagine new plastics.
Plus a little side by side comparison on the ramps. Having fun with this project.

You'll see a photo of a spotlight bracket that I haven't cleaned yet. It will be taken care of it was a late night. Also, there is a photo of my helper. Although he didn't find either screw I dropped

Yeah sorry about Sunday, I was busy doing more important things. I have photographed all of my progess. I believe I will take a break tonight as well. I think when I get back to it on Tuesday, I might switch to the boards to get that going and giving the boards more time to dry.

I absolutely will, boards will be easier to document anyways.
I do need help with the centerfold mech. If anybody has taken this apart before please give me an idea how to start this.

#99 9 years ago

Scrubbing the boards with alcohol now. My kitchen hasn't smelled this powerful since college.

#101 9 years ago

Okay, boards are not cleaning as well as originally hoped but I'll let you judge them. I lost 5 chips that were just unfortunately too gone to handle the stress of being removed. I just cleaned the first round. The second round I'll be removing the fuses. Didn't take a good pic of the Display power board but not much has changed. Does this cap look toast to you? And several resistors look to be flaking.

#108 9 years ago
Quoted from knockerlover:

It's very hard to evaluate a board based on looking at it through pictures. But I would look into the Alltek systems aftermarket boards unless you really want this to be a "project." In the long run, you'll spend less time. But, it is a little more expensive than parts in most cases.

Is there an aftermarket board for this game? I looked and I didn't see any.

I really appreciate it. This is probably the route I will have to go. I would not be opposed to having someone rebuild these but I think that costwise it will be pretty close, (I haven't had too many boards repaired so let me know what you think) The boards are not looking so hot pun somewhat intended. That might actually be pretty cool looking. Cheaper too. Still have a few hurdles to go through though.

#120 9 years ago

Okay, I started working on the left ramp and the pop bumpers. I hate pop bumpers sooo much. They will need to be replaced if I get this all working. I am still terrified of taking the centerfold apart. Some of the metal.that was really bad is having a few spots of rust reappear and will need to be coated.

Looks great! I plan on tumbling everything and doing it for real once I get it working. I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I want to get it cleaned up and running before I really spend the time to restore this one like it needs.

#124 9 years ago

Teeny update here are some pics. I'll need all new pop bumper top side parts but I've got pretty good at derusting plungers. Okay, I found a gate under the middle ramp and not sure where it goes. Also, the last plea.... If anyone knows how to take Centerfold apart please let me know. The springs and hinges look to be a nightmare alone then there is the mech!

No updates, I have been visiting family.

#127 9 years ago

Absolutely zero to update on. I was working on an AC system all weekend and last week I did nothing.

I sent some pictures to Borygard hoping that I can get the original boards going. I know I'll have to send them in to him but I'm hoping he can tell me something from the photos.

#129 9 years ago

OK so Borygard says in his opinion repairing the boards would be nearing the price of new boards. So new boards it is... Some of the metal is having spots of rust return to it, so at this point I will be getting everything working and I do have to move to a new house which has zero room for projects. I am trying to have this cleaned up and ready for boards. It will there stay until I can afford the new boards. After I get it all running, I plan on taking the time to tumble small parts and powdercoat the larger parts like ramps and habit trails. I have not decided on colors and I do have a friend who owns a powder coating business so I will not pay as much as usual. Please give me any suggestions that you have.

I have a late appointment at work but if they for some reason cancel, I plan on putting in a little time on this and a little time on my Centipede restore. If you want to talk about abondoning a project that sucker has been on its side for months now...

Does anyone else own a 2002 Playboy? I am starting to think I own the only one. I have started a thread begging for pictures and asked plenty of times on this thread. I do need to know where the T Gate goes that I found jammed under the center ramp. I feel it has something to do with the Grotto section but I need to know where this bad boy goes.

Quoted from Crash:

Who makes Stern boards? I was not aware they were being reproduced.

They aren't reproduced, I have to buy the originals and NOS hence the close to 1k price tag , that is 1k hoping that I dont also have to replace the DMD

The CPU is $500 alone, I was just assuming the other boards and chips I would need together would get up to $500 as well.

#137 9 years ago

I finally started the center ramp. I just took a little off as most of the night I worked on my Centipede. I haven't dropped anything into the Evapo rust yet. Look at the centerfold and where the smoke settled vs where it didn't.

I won't be back to Waukesha for another week or so, but I'll go out and take pictures if you don't get any help before then.

That would be great if you could. I decided I am going to look up people who own this game and sort of attack them with a will you look at your game for me. So if you are one of those people I apologize.

Quoted from Borygard:

You'll likely need the DMD driver board as well. That's in addition to the display power supply.
I can likely put a set together for you for at least a couple hundred less, if you don't mind reproduction and rebuilt boards. It may take me a bit of time though since I'm not in my shop much the next few weeks. So if you're in a hurry, I'm not going to be much good.

Excellent Rob, I don't care if they are held together with bubble gum kidding of course but I would be completely happy with that. I am in no rush at the current moment so take your time, I need to save a little from the next few paychecks.

This may be a completely dumb question but I know that I can test my DMD in a Williams right? Is it possible to test the driver board in one as well? Please don't burn me alive.

Nothing really new to report. I have been working on this and my Centipede project so I go into spurts of being burned out. I did recieve a manual and new photos for the game last night. I do not plan on using them but designing my own. But I am going to use these for figuring out size and shape. I am not sure what I have going on tonight, I might be flipping my Centipede and doing the decal for the other side.
All I have left to do is the center ramp and the back board toys (drop board and mirror). I want to clean all the coils/plungers and the sleeves. I might get to some of the rest Sunday, I might still be lazy who knows.
I decided to sell off my Ms. Pac Man Cocktail to pay for the boards. I was going to sell it anyways to fund a project Diner that I found out about near me. I called the guy and passed on the Diner, I have too many projects to take on another one anytime soon.
This is just my little rant to keep this thread alive and one of you guys to motivate me to get back in the workshop.

This is my usual project, a completely totaled game that any intelligent person will scrap it. I spend more than its worth but have fun doing it and save a game from annihilation.

#153 9 years ago

After a day in the tumbler, I pulled all the metal out to better assess the ruat damage. I found a few spots that are pitted and I have those in EvapoRust now. Then I will put them back in the tumbler. One example you can see that this thin metal was hard to tell what was what so I tumbled first.

Also, the habit trails are totaled. What color to powder coat them? I thought about pink but that might be too much as they are a large portion of the playfield. White and black are also possibilities. Thoughts?

#157 9 years ago

Ooh Ahh. Here are the plastics. Maybe now you can see why I felt I had to get new ones. Also, the one with the lights, how in the hell am I supposed to give this a 45 degree angle? (See photos)

I want to thank some fellow Pinsiders real quick.

Kevgascan - he is giving me a ton of Stern parts that he no longer needs, I'll buy you a beer one of these days. Thanks again.

brewmeister_fla - he sold me his Playboy manual and some NOS girlie inserts for dirt cheap. And can I add how amazing Stern manuals are? Amazing detail for all you fellow B/W guys. Thanks again bud.

ChrisS - I couldn't find anyone to answer my photos needed thread so I attacked people who owned Playboy. I sent a dozen or so PMs out and not only did Chris answer but was an all around outstanding help with photos and info. Thanks again Chris.

Its Pinsiders like this that keep this hobby going

EDIT: Also KenLayton, he has amswered all of my PMs on certain fixes. Sorry I forgot to mention you in the first round.

#167 9 years ago

Now, on to some photos for you lurkers!

I had to clean up some plungers for the flippers, slingshot and kickouts they were all rusted up and I cannot afford new parts any longer. I saving up for an attorney and my new Stern boards.
Why an attorney you ask, well...

Long story short I had two teens in trucks with small man syndrome having fun with me, I was in Camaro and they boxed me in and tried to push me off the road. I got pissed and drove around them and of course I was the one who got pulled over going very very fast. I sold my Camaro and now I wait for my court date. Anyone who has ever had a reckless please PM me with what happened.

Back to pinball. Here is my EvapoRust from this project haha.

Added a few plastics in finished areas. I did forget to order rubbers so some areas I will have to revisit. Look at the side by side of the slingshot plastics. Also, beaded curtain area completed. I touched up the screws on top of the beaded curtain plastic. They look much better.

Mike, your arcade is where all pins go to die. I don't know of you've ever had a game transaction go well, even you NIB. Call me if you need help with anything, I'll come down there and try.

#173 9 years ago

Ok, had several pieces in the tumbler and was not impressed with the results. These were important pieces like the bunny up kick and such. Got them in again and.hopefully it will do better but basically it looks like two pieces found each other in the tumbler and rubbed together. Another semi prominent piece, the circle base of the spinning triangle, is pitted horribly so I am trying my hand at painting that piece. The ramps I am still not happy with but I don't want to powder coat those as well, I think that would be too much so hopefully I can get those looking a bit better.

#174 9 years ago

Done for the night. I have mostly beem working on boring stuff, new coil sleeves and whatnot. I did put on the big ball guide after I polished it up. It looks a ton better but the photos don't do the before and after justice, so I will just show installed. I am also getting fancier with my before and afters. This is the before and after on the magazine toy. I ran out of rivets so hopefully I will have installed photos tomorrow.

Calling it an early night. I got the magazine toy and the Bunny UK done. The magazine I screwed up a rivet and had to drill it out. One thing led to another and I scuffed my new cover plastic. Such is life. The bunny didn't do so well in the tumbler. New bunnies are available, not incredibly worried about that right now. I forgot to order clear star posts so I am trying to clean the old ones as best I can since I am out of budget (besides boards) for this project. Also, my tumbler lid started spinning and look at the results. Time for a new tumbler....

Thanks, I really appreciate the encouragement.
I hope to get the playfield done this weekend then move to the two toys on the back of it. Those might take 2 weeks alone since one looks pretty intricate and there is about as much rust as the backbox. Then it's the cabinet's turn.
I am also restoring a Centipede arcade right now. Its almost complete. I am close to being done with a Ms Pac cocktail and I have a buyer lined up for it. Its proceeds go to Borygard and some new Whitestar boards!

Oh I also decided to make my own playmate pictures. I am more interested in natural looking girls and not a fan of the 'bolted on tit look'. The good news is I have been 'researching' my favorite Playmates for years now.

#181 9 years ago

I am pleased to announce I am opening up my own pinball restoration company. Its called 'Low End Pins'. I take your pile of hope that everyone tells you to scrap and I make it a good quality game. My current aim is above player's quality. If you are looking for a company that charges more than the other guy and works at his own pace, look no further. I will also throw in the extra benefit of audio recording all of my work sessions, that way you can learn new curse words and laugh at my expense! Act now though... as my skills improve, the price goes up.

I think a lot when working on games.

#182 9 years ago

Here we are for the night. I got the right ramp put back on, nothing huge. Also, you can see what I was able to do with the star posts but I might order some on another purchase. All of these are all behind the ramps and only purpose is to block airballs. I get my rubber kit in and nee pop bumper bodies soon. So I will have to wait on the rest of the reassemble until those arrive.

I originally stripped it down in 3 sections, front middle and back. The back I further broke down to each individual ramp. I started off cleaning everything and reassembling and then after I got it running I was going to go back and restore/replace stuff. But the plastics and tarnished metal were killing me so I went back and started over.

I also pulled this out of storage since I sold my TAF and have room now. I love me some System 11.

Just sent off some metal pieces with my friend. Powder coating the habitrails white and a couple otherbpieces have to be painted black.

#195 9 years ago

The left hand side has a large plastic that when you hit a bumper it moves down a fraction of an inch. If you hit the bumpers enough times, the plastic has gone down far enough to reveal a nude girl. The right hand side is supposed to be a 2 way mirror. I am not sure what you do in the game, but once you've done it, the lights come on and reveal another dame.

#197 9 years ago

Here is its current state. It looks very rusty but it is not that bad. Most wipes off with my finger. You will see a large machine screw. This is what the plastic appears to be attached to. When a bumper switch is activated, the motor turns on for a bit. There is a switch that tells the motor when it is all the way down. This is mostly speculative from looking at whats attached to what and from playing the game many years ago. Now you can see why I was so nervous to work on this part.
I have played all Sterns except for Sopranos, Nascar, and Big Buck Hunter. This is the only Stern I liked from the first ball. It has toys everywhere and its a theme everyone in the family can enjoy. I will get a photo of my grandmother playing this game as soon as I get it running haha.

#198 9 years ago

The motor is mounted to the metal back and on the bottom of the machine screw you can see how the plastic is attached to the screw (in the third photo you can barely see the bottom of the main machine screw poking up). The black triangular plastic on the right hand side is the bottom of the Tease plastic. The motor moves the entire assembly except for the motor downward (this photo is the mech upside down so it would go upwards here)

#199 9 years ago

The wood on the back part is heavily damaged. I injected the bad parts with wood hardener so hopefully I will be able to sand the bad parts out. We'll see. The mech for the Tease toy apears to be okay however the switch broke off. The first of many switches I am sure I will have to replace. A lot of the screws also broke off. I know I need to find a two way mirror (plexi) if anyone knows where I can get some you'll get a thumbs up! I scrubbed the grease off of the metal piece as best I could. I will take it to a friend's house to see if I can sand blast the paint off and start fresh.

Since you lurking bastards didn't help me find a two way mirror, I found a place that does custom jobs. It was $15 and $16 dollars to ship it (just like a pinball part). Now let's hope I measured correctly and that I can drill the two holes in it without busting it. The wood turned out better than I expected. It sanded smooth and I just put the first coat of paint on it. You can still see the bad spots but I think those will go away with a few more coats.

I went to a buddy's house (fellow Pinsider but i can't remember his handle) thanks Jeff, I used his sand blaster and orbital sander on the metal piece. It seriously almost cleaned up perfectly. There were a couple of bad rust spots that we took down to metal so I repainted it. I didn't take a before paint picture because my phone was dead. I should have waited but I figured if you all missed one step you wouldn't mind too much.

I have been watching this thread from the start- very interesting, thanks for sharing!
You have taken on quite a challenge- most people would look at a burnt pin and just shake their head.
When you are all done it's going to look like you preformed a miracle.
P.S. I had know idea this pin had so many features. Kinda makes me want one.

I honestly forgot about all the features. I remembered the spinning triangle. There are hardly any videos on Youtube (nudity I guess) I relearned about all of them from disassembling them. They aren't bash toys either so theoretically, if I get the running they should be good for a bit even though they are intricate.

Thanks guys, I can't wait to get back after it Sunday. My friend sand blasted some screws for me and I was surprised how awesome it was at removing rust from hardware. Better and less messy than EvapoRust actually. I plan on taking over the large machine screw from the Tease toy this weekend. If it doesn't do well I will switch back to EvapoRust.

Great job- fun thread to watch. I wonder what nightmare lurks under the next piece?

This should be the last playfield piece thankfully. I am going to flip the playfield and polish up a few more mechs and solder in the bumper lights. Then its the cabinets turn. Then its time for boards after I sell my soul to fund them.

Who wants an update? Got my parts back from the powder coating. Very pleased with their work. I had to powder coat the bracket that holds on to the spinning triangle since it kept rerusting I did it flat black and the white rails look good. There is still plenty of time to switch colors so give me your honest opinion it wont hurt my feelings in the least. Is the habit trail too distracting?

I think they will look better in the cabinet with lights on. I will roll with them for now. They can always be changed. I'd be dumb if I didn't at least see what they look like with the game on.

Thanks everyone, we are getting there. I keep thinking how terrifying it will be when I hit the switch for the first time haha.

Mini update for the night. I got my 2 way mirror in. I got the corners rounded but the don't match. It turns out that doesn't matter because its hidden anyways. I wish I.would have paid attention to that, the rounded corners cost $5. Oh well. I will be telling Marco about this manufacturer so hopefully they will have them in stock again. Still working on the wood backboard but it is getting there. Just my usual OCD kicking in. I think I only need to buy NIB from now on haha.
Let's play 'Find Futurepinhead'

Okay, took some of the backboard hardware to my buddy's sandblaster. I really need one of these things, and an ultrasonic cleaner and a new tumbler. I also took a bracket from my DMD display to see how it would do, wow look at the side by side.

Yes, I am worried about the tracks on the habit trails and especially the VUK. If I have to, I will sandblast and send these off for chroming. That will fix it for good. I am holding off on replacing any coils or switches until I see what works. You will have to come up a bit if you want to take over this project.

The Turkey Hunting USA is still sitting in the same spot as the day I got it. I plan on converting it back to a TMNT cabinet.

#250 9 years ago

Let's worry about getting this lady running before wjat the habit trails will do later on. I needed the switch for the Tease toy. The original literally fell apart while removing it. This is the worst part I have come across yet. Unfortunately, I have a wedding this weekend so probably won't get out to the workshop until next week. I ordered a new drop target to get it white again and I had to order a whole new decal set to get the bunny for it... sigh. Keep pushing forward.

My brother in law is a graphic artist and will be making me custome side art (why not go custom if I have to do it anyways right?) Let's hear some suggestions. And this won't be done for some months so don't get too excited.

And thanks to j_m who will be sending me some miscellaneous parts that he has laying around for this game!

Quoted from Squeakman:

Since your bunny head didn't tumble out well, you should powder coat it white like the ball guide. Its supposed to be white anyway.

Are you sure? Here is a NOS Marco. I plan on doing something with it. Just not sure what yet. Pink, White, Chrome or NOS are all options right now.

#268 9 years ago
Quoted from boagman:

What Squeakman meant by "Its [sic] supposed to be white anyway." is that the Playboy bunny icon is, in fact, white in color. Yes, the original VUK toy in Stern's machine is bare metal, but Squeakman was saying, "Well, since it didn't tumble back to the 'right' bare metal coloration, why not paint it white to match the habitrails you now have in the machine, *especially* since the bunny logo is supposed to be white, anyway?"
If you need an example, look at any of the playfield inlane/outlane rollovers, or, alternately, look at the logo that's on the drop target. The bunny is white. That's why he mentioned that.
I, too, think it would be an interesting look alongside the habitrails, and you wouldn't have to paint the inside of it, necessarily. Could be something to think about, anyway...nothing that *has* to happen, but since you're just going to have the part lying around anyway, why not try it out for kicks?

Gotcha, makes total sense. You guys have been busy on this thread haha. I had a wedding reception last night so kind of hurting but I got some new parts in so stay tuned this week!

Finished up the last few mechs on the bottom and soldered in the pop bumper lights. Also put all new bulbs in the bottom. I know I have to replace 4 or 5 sockets due to brittleness.
Put on all the spotlights and new sockets on top.
I put the new drop target in and decal. I had to buy the decal set for the drop target so why not put the flipper decals on?

I agree, tis a bit dark. I might order some soon. I am about to put a pause on this one until Borygard and I can get together on some boards. I am almost done with the playfield, then I have a bit of work to do on the cabinet but other than that its just waiting for the brain of the game.

I might try to fit in a playfield swap on Taxi in the downtime.

#286 9 years ago
Quoted from boagman:

I should have said the same before telling you that it still wasn't too late to rerubber in white. Sorry about that. You really are doing a great job with this!
Can I make one more (possible) recommendation? The black posts might be a good change to red. For some reason, now that you've done the habitrails in white, I kind of want to go with more of a red-white-and-blue theme around the playfield (Super Jackpot music might have something to do with this, too). Original colors provide a rather drab/blah playfield on this game.

It's fine, I appreciate the constructive criticism. I plan on changing the flippers rubbers to yellow to match the yellow right by them. It will also be easier to see them in action. The slingshots I would like to change to white and a few others but it will more or less be a mix and match.

You actually raise a good point on the posts. I'm not feeling the red on the playfield but I do have more options that I can look out for. What about these? And keep in mind everyone that I am in a dark and dreary pole barn and everything will look better with the game on. I am not an LED person at all except for 2 games, WCS and this one. So I might play with some LEDs after I play a few games, who knows.

So...you died, then? Can I have it? Oh! DIBS!!!!!!!

Nope not dead yet. Been doing other life stuff. I did work on the backboard a bit. I had two screws break apart from the backboard (the ones that held the motor in place) that are apparently impossible to find. I have tried all the usual places. So I am trying to find a creative way to get that motor attached. I will most likely just do a thinner machine screw with a nut on the other side.

I have also been doing some work on my Centipede restore.

Hey, did you all forget about me? I've been on an arcade hiatus for awhile. Rob has my boards ready (assuming they weren't part of his horrible luck) but I have my big speeding ticket coming up in January. I need to start on the the backbox and get that metal plate ready. I am still not sure what I am going to do with the decals but we'll see of this beast works. Playfield is done except a couple of light sockets, one switch and some plastics. Oh and trying to figure out about customizing the rubbers

Any news to report?

Hey sorry, I sent my DMD controller board and DMD to Rob Anthony to have him test them and let me know if they are functional. They looked the best out of them all. I am then purchasing all the rest of the stuff. Playfield is done.

I just bought a house and then Uncle Sam wasn't very nice with my tax returns. I owe him just under a grand so funds are tight as always. I am expecting to need about another 1000-1200 before I can hit the On switch.

#300 9 years ago

Rob Anthony got to look at the DMD driver board and DMD for me. The driver board is shot and the DMD works but has some lines out. I will use it for now. I'm more of an alphanumeric guy so it won't bug me too much but I will replace it at some point. So I need all boards now. It sucks but oh well. I need to win the lottery before I can get these haha.

Okay, you motivated me. I went out and scrubbed the wire harness wuth Mean Green. I've got it hanging up right now drying out. I have 2 issues
1. I have one part that all the wires actually melted together. I have no idea how bad it is, I turned it on several times before I took it all apart and I got it to say Stern one time but that doesn't mean anything.
2. All of the photos I took when taking it apart were lost when my phone crashed. Please if someone has this game, take as many photos of the wires as you can. I would greatly appreciate it.

#305 9 years ago

I was able to pull all the melted wires apart. Three left some.exposed nwires but the rest came off clean, like a Twisler. I'll wrap the three in tape before I think of a more permanent solution.

#308 9 years ago
Quoted from DocRotCod:

Sometimes I will unsolder the wire at the nearest point, slide on a length of shrink tubing, and shrink it over the bare copper area. Looks nice and neat.

Yep, I suppose I could do that. It's in the center of the harness so I would have to snip it and solder it back together. It'd be easy to blend in with the shrink tube since all of those wires are black haha.

I am not a modder, I never have been. I want my games to look like they just came from the factory.

However.... For some reason, I love the way Sterns look modded. If and I say if in a big big way, that I get some life into this old girl, it is going to be modding time. I want to make custom cab art, change up the girls to be personalized to my likings and LEDs and hot pink rubbers. That's just what I have pictured in my head at least. But life keeps throwing curve balls at me and I only have around $200 saved of the around $1000 I need for the boards so this keeps getting pushed back sadly.

#318 8 years ago

Ok, I can't seem to find the artwork for the decals that I wanted. Someone on a previous page suggested I modify the Bally Playboy artwork to fit this Stern. Since I love the artwork I think I might go with that. I talked to Jeff over at Pinball Pimp and he said he'd be able to work me up something easily. I think that might be the direction I go. Any thoughts?

FUNDS! I may be getting another Centipede arcade project and I already have a buyer lined up. That will give me about 400 profit to put toward the boards. That would have me at $600 but I need $1000 to $1200, not sure on the total, never heard back from borygard on the total figure.

#323 8 years ago

You are correct, no updates. Although I did move it to my new house and it is in my living room. I am doing some pinball / arcade repairs this weekend. I have another Centipede project showing up in a week. (I have 4 now). This one already has a new home and I should be able to sell it for 500-600 as soon as its complete, I already have a buyer lined up. All is going to fund the boards. I happened across a Solenoid driver board that hopefully Borygard will take as a partial trade.

Pink Titans sound awesome. But I am going to make sure it flips before anymore customization.

#340 8 years ago

The update is it sits beside my fireplace and next to my Space Shuttle. Patiently awaiting for money for boards. I just had to waterproof my workshop in the basement and that was $3k and after that I have to pave a new sidewalk and pull down a rotten balcony. I'm guessing $3k there too. Check in with me in 6 months to a year and hopefully I'll have an update then. The joys of being an adult.

1 month later
#343 8 years ago

Ok, your patience is much appreciated. I HAVE AN UPDATE!

There are a few redemption games that uses all of the boards and DMD the this Stern uses. I just purchased one of these redemptions to part it out.

#345 8 years ago

I'm excited boys and girls.

#347 8 years ago

My heart will be pumping for sure, I'm not sure what I will scream but it'll be something. Remember, I could get it to turn on before with those horrible looking boards. But I was getting scrambled text on the DMD and some sound coming out of the speaker.

I am not sure, does Stern have the credit dot like BW that also comes with a sound when you boot up?

So with new boards, I don't really know what else could be wrong with the game. Few molexes will have to be rebuilt, I'm sure and maybe some wire work but only time will tell. I need to pull out the metal plate and clean it up and clear it somehow.

Boards are in. I have to go pick them up about 20 minutes away. I will be picking them up after work. I'll need to run the wires and install boards and roms tonight. The tricky part is going to be getting the connections in their appropriate spot. Remember most of the wires are brown or black at this point. Hopefully the keys will help me out with the connections. A very helpful pinhead on a Facebook group took the time to send me dozens of photos this week. She is amazing. Thanks Christy if you are on here as well!

EDIT: I probably won't be ready to hit the switch tonight but it'll be in the next two to three days for sure as long as everything arrived as it is supposed to.

#360 8 years ago
Quoted from KenLayton:

You didn't wash the harness?
At least get some rags and alcohol (maybe some Mean Green too) to wipe off the soot on the wires so you can see the wire color.

Yeah I did, they were pretty bad. I'll post some pictures in just a second. I washed them first with mean green and then They soaked in a bath of Alcohol for a day. They got a little better but still not good at all.

Quoted from thedefog:

Put the harness in the dish washer. I did that with my Pinbot, worked like a charm. Vid suggested it, so I won't take credit for that idea.

I would have to unsolder from the board. For some reason, this pin the wires go from the board connections all the way to soldered on the playfield parts. There is no connections, I've never seen that in a pin. That's not out of the question to try but it won't be until I know I can make this thing run again. Even then, I doubt that would do any better than Mean Green and alcohol.

#361 8 years ago

Wires get darker closer to the connections so I'll have to follow them back.
Box showed up busted to hell. Boards look fine but I'll have to see about the DMD. DMD does have burn in.

For the metal backbox mount (is there a name for this piece?) it is rusted to hell. I am just trying to make sure I can get the game running before I pull this piece and restore it. So what I am doing for testing is sanding down the mounts to achieve a solid ground. I de-rusted the screws that hold the boards in and they are drying now. Once I verify everything works, I will pull the mount out and will probably have to paint everything but the mounts. It is extremely pitted due to extensive rust.

#363 8 years ago

Holy crap, I'm getting nervous.

Again, I cleaned the board mounts, not the full back. I'm waiting to see if I can get it running before i do any more restoring. I'm way over my price point as it is.

Lights came on some sound indication comes through, (what does this mean)?

Nothing on DMD. When I first started turning it on, the leds on the driver board, half were on. Now they are all on. The sound didn't come on for like 30 seconds when turned on, now its immediately.

This is the sound.

#373 8 years ago

Well, first step in the right direction.

Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to start redoing the connections. I have the wire harness from the parted out redemption. They have the same connections and even keyed perfectly. I should be able to remove the old wires from those, nip the new wires and plug them in correctly.

I don't know anything about Sterns so bare with me. Is there a switch that is putting it into the menu? Is it going into menu since this is the first time its being booted?

Thanks Rob. I was curious on the switches at the coin door so I disconnected them near the door. That didn't change it. So that means it's in the backbox more than likely. This was the same sound it was making with the old boards so I know its not the new boards. I will have to trace them up this weekend. More than likely they got melted together.

I got the DMD going, let's just say someone working on this game is an idiot

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

i don't know if the wiring harness from something else will work. Might have some of the same connectors, but they will be all different lengths and go to totally different areas of the playfield. Plus you won't have high power going where you need it, thicker GI wires where want and need them. That would just be a shit mess. I'd stick with this one and just put new molex connectors on everything.

I was talking about just replacing the connectors, not the whole harness. I have all the ones I need since the redemption game used the same boards and the connections are already keyed the same. Not sure if you can reuse these connections.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

you could just send the harness out. I'm sure someone here would redo all the connectors for you for a charge.

I'm actually pretty good at crimping, I have had a lot of experience on Sys 6 games in the area. I think I might go that route, its the safest way really. I haven't decided.

Disconnect CN6 from the driver board. That may get you into attract mode. Follow those wires back into the cabinet to find the short if so.

Centerfold closed correctly. Strip tease motor is running continuously. The pyramid spinny thing is not spinning to its correct spot, but I'm pumped!

#384 8 years ago
Quoted from CaptainNeo:

I would not try and use those pressure type connectors. They are garbage. Use the trifucate pins and make new molex style connectors.

I'm building a list of connections right now. There's no point in going all out this far to cheap out now. It looks like I'll be around $35 before shipping on all the connections. It will be a very long process. I'll probably try to do 3 or 4 a day so I don't burn myself out.

#386 8 years ago

Small update. I actually got pretty good at wiggling CN6 and being able to move my way through the menu. Wiggle left for select, wiggle to the right to navigate left, etc. So I got to the centerfold motor test and it turns out that's the one getting stuck running. The Closed switch isn't activating so really I'm at a stand still until I can rebuild the connections. That's going to be almost all of my problems.

Thanks guys, GPE was out of town and their site was down last week (I'm assuming for the expo) so I will get around to purchasing these connectors sometime this week.

#392 8 years ago

That's awesome! It looks like someone deflated the topper.

#393 8 years ago

Just bought all the connectors. It was around $32 shipped. Over 250 parts in the order and I forgot the damn keys...

#395 8 years ago

Email sent, still waiting to hear from them. Hopefully we can get that added with no issues, I can do it without them but I would much rather not. If I was a full on operator I would just break toothpicks in them

#396 8 years ago

Ok, I got the keys added to the order. They were very quick to respond to me, I love dealing with GPE. I have a couple switches coming from Marco that snapped off while I was cleaning them. That should tell you how brittle some of this stuff is to deal with. I am sure I will end up replacing at least a quarter of the switches after a little gameplay.

Quoted from boagman:

I sincerely hope that I get to play this machine one day. It's kind of a semi-obsession with me, quite frankly. I'm always checking for updates, which you've been very kind about posting, thank you.

Thanks, I like hearing that. It has been a very long tiring process. I doubt I will take anything like this on for a few years after this one. If I came across another, I will do some steps to prevent further rusting and I would store it for a bit.

Quoted from boagman:

I shudder to think what this thing will end up costing you in the end.

I quit adding it up for the exact same reason.

#401 8 years ago

Connectors have officially been shipped. They are in Nebraska now. I am taking off all next week. I am trying to make plans like going to Indy and help a friend with some arcade repairs while he tries to touch up a Blackout Playfield for me. But I also hope to rebuild these connections that week as well.

#402 8 years ago

Parts arrived in a hundred different little baggies last night. I will start on it mid next week.

#403 8 years ago

Nothing to see here folks.

#407 8 years ago

Ok, so i found the short. It wasn't in the connector but the wires were melted together right next to it. The coils aren't firing so I'm going to keep rebuilding. I might do another 5 today and take a rest until tomorrow.

#408 8 years ago

Okay. I'm down to about 5 connectors now. I'm still getting no coils and no flashers. I did notice this. It looks like there may have been a fuse here at some point.

Hey guys, nothing really to report. I have somehow become the local tech and everyone is calling wanting games to be repaired before the holidays. I have pretty much a machine booked for repair every night and I'm going out of my mind

#413 8 years ago

The extra money helps. I've also been repairing games and receiving other project pinballs in return. More to come on that later

#420 8 years ago

Thanks guys, it truly was a momentous occasion. I'll post the the remaining issues I'm having and maybe we can get them sorted out before an upcoming expo. I'll post them tomorrow when I have my keyboard handy.

#423 8 years ago

Thanks guys.

Okay here is the list of things that are going on with this. I have not diagnosed anything yet but maybe you all can help me with them.

1. The number of balls is off. I put in 4 balls like it asks and it kicks two out at once.
2. The two lane switches on the right hand side activate the left slingshot.
3. Pop bumpers do nothing, they don't pop, they don't score, and they don't activate the tease on the back.
4. Peep show (the beads on the left) The right side magnet works but not the left side.
5. Centerfold ramp, the centerfold toy does nothing but make noise. You can hear it trying to open but it just grinds.
6. When the ball gets into the lock feature, they don't stay there. The lock has three switches so I assume that it should kick out another ball into the shooter lane but instead it releases the ball from the lock and let's me play with that one. I think this has something to do with the amount of balls in the trough.

That's all I can remember. 6 issues isn't too bad huh? I wish they were a little less serious issues but I'll take what I can get.
Also, each time I hit the drop target for the centerfold ramp it says Centerfold Multiball hit ramp. That seems too easy for getting a multiball right? I mean, at least make me hit it three times or something. I don't know. I've never really played this game, it might be a setting.

#425 8 years ago
Quoted from boagman:

#1 sounds very much like an issue with the optos in the ball trough. I'd test them thoroughly.

Agree

Quoted from boagman:

#2 sounds like it could be wiring.

Yeah, definitely wiring, or maybe even the connector that I rebuilt. I am not really sure how to diagnose.

Quoted from boagman:

#3: are you certain that all the connectors below the game are together? With them being absolutely unresponsive, this sounds like a disconnected connector to me.

This does not surprise me. I had to completely rebuild these and I did it a very long time ago. Its not the wiring at the popbumpers though (I think) because I would assume one would be messing up but not all three, maybe a connection? Any way to diagnose?

Quoted from boagman:

#4...I dunno. "Have you tried staples?"

No idea what your saying, assuming a joke

Quoted from boagman:

#5...could the toy be "reversed"? Just wondering.

This is my fear. This was one of the most complex things I had ever rebuilt at the time. I've since worked on some nightmare so maybe it won't be as bad, but I do not want to take it apart again

Quoted from boagman:

#6, which doesn't sound like any issue at all.

I was wondering why they were staying up there during multiball, that's pretty unique to lock balls during multiball. I like it.

#427 8 years ago
Quoted from boagman:

#3: with absolutely *nothing* happening, I have to think that there's an entire connector that's either not connected below the playfield, or to the board itself up top. Don't know how I'd diagnose that without playing Scooby-Doo and following the wires themselves.

It very well could be. There was a big connector for all of them, I will have to look tonight.

Quoted from boagman:

#5 actually sounds reversed to me, or that the gears are sheared.

I'm leaning more toward reversed, you can hear it grinding. I will manually open it tonight and see what it does then. It could just be gunked up but I doubt that.

Quoted from boagman:

#2 confuses me as well, especially after watching the video and seeing that it's the *right* return lane switch that operates the *left* slingshot. I'm just plain confused. You're right: it could be the connector. Here's one question for you: do the left slingshot switches still operate the slingshot correctly? What are they doing when/while the game is running? Here's an idea: put the game into Switch Test and test all three/four of the switches in question (two slingshot switches, the right return lane, and was the right outlane part of the problem, too?). Are the switches actually properly matching up with what they're supposed to be registering?

The slingshot switches do activate the slingshot as well. I need to make sure the lanes are registering lanes and slinghshot, maybe there is a short causing both normally open switches to register for both at the same time. I did have about 10 wires that had melted to become one big wire. I had fixed all of that but maybe there is something similar somewhere in the game. Does anyone know if they are on the same connector?

#429 8 years ago
Quoted from CraigC:

It sounds like a short somewhere. I would go through the harness and playfield and make sure that nothing is pinched, stripped or shorting. if you go into switch test do you see the 2 switches activating when you press the return lane switch?

That is most definitely possible, I will try that tonight.

Quoted from CraigC:

are the boards known good?

They were pulled from a working redemption game but only limited parts are used on the boards in that game, not like pinball usage.

#430 8 years ago

Ok, I have company over tonight so I couldnt invest too much time in it. The centerfold does work sometimes. I found it in the test menu and it didn't work at first, then it worked perfectly and now not again. It keeps trying to close even though it's closed, I'm thinking switch?
The lanes register both correctly and the slingshot, its the same with the slingshot, it registers lanes. So definitely a short. I was worried I messed up the connection, but its just a short. Now I just have to find it.

#433 8 years ago
Quoted from Insane:

Could is be a fuse for the pops? Have never worked on this particular game. just a thought. Again congrats on getting it to this stage. Have you decided what you are going to do with the side art?

Unless their is a fuse beside them (like on flippers) that I missed, all fuses are good. No this is the first time working on a Stern.
Side art, the girl is actually good. It's mainly lettering and I'll let my friend attack it with an airbrush

#435 8 years ago
Quoted from Det_Deckard:

With pins that have been in bars, they have their own stink. How the hell do you get the stink out of that thing? Can you?
Nice thread. Looking on this, it makes me wonder if I shouldn't have passed on some boards that were in a fire house fire. Things can look pretty bad before they are actually damaged.

After the fire, this had sat outside for two years. So plenty of wind to blow it away and rain and snow to wash it off It had plenty of time to stink out. When I got it, there was absolutely no smell whatsoever.

Salut,
I just bought a Stern Playboy as well and it looks like there are some things non standard in the backbox (domino connectors/screw terminals).
FuturePinhead, do you have some hires images of the backbox, so I could compare with what I have?
This is my first Stern, so I'm not sure if the things should be like this or not and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
flugs

Absolutely, send me a message and I'll be happy to send you a lot of images.

OK fellas, I have to do some work to my house so this treasure needs to go for sale. $1300

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/for-sale-playboy-stern-2002-project

#439 7 years ago

This is sold pending pickup.
I've had quite a few people ask me why I am selling it. I bought a foreclosure house a year and a half ago. It has been filled with all kinds of surprises. I needed to sell the Playboy to repair my concrete in front of the house. It is lifting up due to a water table issue and actually blocking my front door from opening. So I hate to sell the game, but this has hit an emergency at my house. I have to redo my sewer line, sidewalk, and excavate my front yard and that is beginning to be costly.

I want to thank everyone that has helped me in this thread. The new owner luckily is a nearby Pinside member so I will still get to play it when it is completed. I am sure he will be on here posting questions with the few remaining problems and I hope you all are as helpful with him as you were with me.

Too bad there isn't a way to add/transfer the OP tag to Tsskinne, because the blue bar belonging to the person no longer working on the game is going to mess me up every time.

Hey, maybe I'll still get all the credit for fixing it up

#453 7 years ago

Excellent. I'm glad the slingshot was something simple. I remembered it had something to do with the spring, so I probably had a faint memory of having to order another one.
