After researching pins on and off for the last 5 years I have finally purchased my first pin.

2011-10-28_23.34.39.jpg2011-10-28_23.34.39.jpg

I picked it up about 3 hours away and it fits perfect in my RAV4 after I took out the seats. I never sat back there anyways while driving it.

Main problem is the DMD. It shoots crazy lines TZ98 (seller) said he put it into his DE SW and it didn't work in there either so I am going to buy a new DMD before anything else.

A few rookie questions though.

I do not know the name of the part but the piece of metal that is behind the slingshot rubber is broken on one side. Shown in picture to the right. What is the name of this part so I can order a new one.

THere are three red lights on my board. Only two of them light... is that normal?

2011-10-28_23.41.07.jpg2011-10-28_23.41.07.jpg

Also, is it normal to have chips missing? I am missing one on my main board and one behind the DMD.

Also, when I first fire it up, the first line is No pain no Gain. But all mine does is "No pain no...."
and then the sound shorts out. The sound then works fine from there out.

Great buy! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Congrats FPH!
TFTC is a sweet first pin!
Don't forget to check and reseat all of the pins/connectors.

Edit: Or actual important things like ROM chips and slingshot switches... Doh!

Nice, that's a good first pin! My first pin was a LW3, and I really hadn't played any DE games that I could recall. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it once I got into it. Maybe their weren't many DE game around when I was playing pinball, I remember the B/W games, mostly Williams.

Loved the TV show, never was sure if the crypt keeper was supposed to be male or female. Even though it's been off for a while I think it's still a cool theme. Congrats on the first pin, now to decide what will go next to it!

Sorry I had to edit the second post my questions did not show up.

OT but I found my favorite arcade machine quarter mile from the sellers house at a gas station.

My LW3 does the same thing, when I flip the switch it says "We're back in Act" instead of action. The DE games from that time could have one or two rom chips, depending on the version. I'm pretty sure that's all normal.

Congratulations on your first pin!!! Love to hear about a fellow pinhead getting their first pin.

Quoted from futurepinhead:

The switch on the right side of picture is broken you need to replace it. If you have the manual you should be able to find the part number for it.

Everything looks normal on your game. The broken piece of metal is a leaf switch for the slingshots. The number should be 180-5054-00 Don't forget to take some pictures before you remove anything. It always helps to have a reference to go back to. You will need to do some soldering to switch that out. You could also play without it. I have a JP that I didn't realize was missing the switch for a year or more. The other switch fired the coil most of the time, so I didn't even notice. If that display is having problems and it didn't work in the SW machine it could also be the DMD controller board and not the DMD. A new DMD will not get you a new controller board if that is what is causing your display problems. I would do some more research before getting a new DMD. Other than that it looks like a nice clean machine. Get that display figured out and have fun with it. Taking mine to a Halloween party tomorrow night. You could also try and wiggle the connectors and cables to the DMD and controller board to see if you can get the display to clear up. It might point you in the right direction like cracked solder joints on the pins or something. Good Luck!

Great first choice. It has everything a good pinball machine should have and good rule depth.

great pin, enjoy it

Sound startup: My baywatch does the same thing, "Baywatch will be right ba..." (instead of "back")

Lights: Yes, two lights good.

DMD: A very common problem on the small 16x132 displays (as used on five games, Checkpoint to Batman) is a failed R95 resistor. It is very common for this 33k, 1/2 watt resistor to go out of spec, or even open. This will cause the display to look garbled (see picture). Often the display itself is fine; it's just this resistor that needs to be replaced. <<Note this is from the pinrepair guide, it goes on and on with more possible solutions/issues with DMDs on these DE machines so you may want to find and read the whole thing>> Specifically on my DMD I had intermittent problems where it just went totally off after a while and once I reseated the connector on the power board the problem went away. Yours looks a little more involved.

Slingshot switch: There are two switches for that slingshot and they are wired together. If you want you can usually replace both switches at the same time and you can buy them already wired/soldered together and save yourself some time if you're not too handy with the soldering iron. You'll still have to do some soldering but not as much.

Nice first pin!
