I've got my two first issues with a TZ. It's been playing perfect for a year, until this week. First thing is the powerball isn't recognized when it comes out of the trough. Is there a sensor I can adjust for this? The second is the upper left flipper works only occasionally now. I did take it apart, clean it and put it back together, but that didn't seem to do anything. I can move it about 1/4 of the travel, then engage it with the button, and it does flip and remains up till I let go of the button, but doesn't really do more than that. The tip of the plunger was a little rough, so I filed it a bit till it was smoother, but that didn't help at all. It is still hit or miss if it flips, and 99% miss right now.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts for fixes.

Id bet your flipper opto boards are getting flakey, my upper flippers on JD were all weak, put in those nice replacements from Great Lakes Modular with the adjustable magnet and they worked like new again.

The powerball is sensor switch 26. Often times its just the cable. Is the power ball recognized when it comes out of the scoop? Pinbits sells an upgraded cable for this problem.

The flipper issue is more serious. I'd start by checking your flipper fuses with a dmm. It sounds like your hold power works but your high power doesn't. Verify in switch edge test that when you press the left flipper button that both upper and lower flipper buttons register strongly without flickering. Once you rule out switch, I'd be looking at the high voltage circuitry to the coil. Check the fuse as I said with a meter. You can't just look at the slow blow style fuses. Check that all three coil wires are intact. Once you rule out these things you should meter the coil and the transistors in the board to see that they're working.

You should not file off the mechanics in the flipper. If that needs to happen them rebuild the whole flipper. It's hard to say if its mechanical. But based off the description it didnt sound to be. But the flipper bat should raise and lower without any binding.

I hate those magnet based boards. You're constantly adjusting them every couple months and sometimes after moving the machine around.

I glued the magnets in place, good to go!

I think this one has the magnet boards in it. On the right flipper burron, it flips both upper and lower flippers and turns one two lights for each right flipper in the switch edges test. On the left flipper button, it turns one two for lower left flipper and one for the upper left flipper, and it doesn't flip the flipper, related?

Yes, the powerball is recognized on switch 26. It's closed when a steel ball is in the, and open when the powerball is there. Odd that in gameplay it's not though. Maybe it's was just a fluke.

Aha, I see that's second light in the DMD is for a switch located in the flipper assembly, so if it's not flipping it doesn't light.

I cant remember how the lights blinked, slide the magnet around and see if it gets better, when you find the sweet spot glue or tape it so it doesnt move.

Yup, the powerball switch is working, was a fluke. The upper left flipper is still down though.

All the wires nicely soldered to the solenoid lugs?

#11 11 years ago

Yup, everything is still soldered nicely. I'll have to measure voltages, fuses are fine.

#12 11 years ago

clean the flipper optos with a qtip and alcohol,it worked for me.

#13 11 years ago

Did some testing. Measuring voltage from the upper right flipper, I get 45 volts on one side and zero volts on the other side when pressed. This is the flipper that operates.

On the left upper. I measure 45 volts on one side and 24 volts on the other. I did notice that the left flipper soneloid is a non Williams part while the right one is Williams. I'm guessing this isn't the first time this flipper has stopped working, and the solution was a new solenoid back them.

Thoughts?

Id guess you already checked/traced the wires to see if they snapped or got pinched on something. How does the j907 and j902 molex connectors look on your fliptronic II board?

Oh hey, one other suggestion edit your title of the thread to **TECH HELP** TZ flipper issue, might got more response, best of luck!

#16 11 years ago

I might be wrong, but I think the Power ball is recognised because it it the only one that does not set off the opto sensors the same. So if the switch for the ball position is there and the opto doesn't recognise a ball, then it knows it's a power ball. Therefore, is there a chance that the final ball switch isn't working, therefore it won't know it's a power ball.

#17 11 years ago

I changed the title centerflank, good idea. The powerball issue was just a fluke. I haven't had it repeat. The sensors for the powerball are working. The flipper is the difficult issue at this moment.

Time for taxes but I'll pick this up in the evening. I did look at the fliptronics board last night, it's all clean and orderly, all fuses are fine. I didn't pay close attention to see if any wires to see if there are some that are crimped. I'll look close tonight.

Any other suggestions, I'd love to hear it.

Any updates on that troublesome flipper?

#19 11 years ago

Check your EOS switch on the flipper assembly. It sounds like its stuck closed and this is why only hold power is activating.

#20 11 years ago

I've checked the wires, looking closely at them, and unseating/reseating connectors, no change. The EOS switch is fine. I can close that manually and it registers. If I move the flipper up a bit by hand before engaging the left button, it'll move all the way by itself (slowly) and switch that closed too.

I don't have another machine to swap boards out which is the next popular thing to do (at least from what I've read in other posts). Instead, I ordered a flipper rebuild kit, and another coil, along with new rubbers, post stops, cushions, and a few other things to baby my TZ. Have I mentioned I love this game? Got to get her back to perfect shape again!

Good deal, keep us posted, its always a very sad day when a TZ is inoperable.

New coil must cure it I would have thought. A light overhaul is always a good idea. I've just finished a strip and major Playfield cut and buff (http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/playfield-strip-and-buff) and am really pleased with the difference it made.

Good luck.

I'll report what happens with the new parts. Nice job on your cleaning M_M. Yours plays like mine now, lightning!

1 week later
#24 11 years ago

I received the parts last week and finally had the time to install. I tried the coil first, and sure enough, replacing the coil fixed the flipper. I'll save the rebuild kit for later!

Result, always good to hear someone is back up and running.

Enjoy.
