Hi,

Am restoring a FPII together with a friend. Game is coming out nicely.

However .

1 Game will not boot.
2 All G.I lamps work
3 Displays are dead
4 Sound board OK. All sounds check out and are playing out with the test button.

The digital error display seems to be partly broken.

As you can see we figured initially it could be either a 5 or a 9 displaying.

We have done this.

1, swapped the security chip to a new one
2, swapped the RAM chip to a new one.
3, We have good 12 v and good 5 v in.
4, However on certain meassure points on the board itself we have only 2.5v-
5, Games behaves same, still does not boot. Nothing but the sound board is responding.

We figured now perhaps one more segment on the digital display is broken which could lead to further error codes being possible.

We have not changed or have the possiblity to burn new ROMS.

Will faulty or shortened ROMS cause a voltage drop on the various V measure points on the board ?

What would be the next step here for us ? We've checked for cracked solder joints etc and reseoldered just to make sure.

Thanks in advance.

regards
Matt

Here is how I worked on Sys6-7 CPU.

Thanks Bud. Don't however have this setup.

Again. Will broken / shorted ROMs cause irregular voltages on the test points on the board ?

Thanks

I've not seen bad ROMS cause irregular voltages on a test point. All things are possible, but I think it less likely.

My advise would be to cruise on over to Pincoders store and get his adapter. I've linked to his website below or you can check out his Pinside store.

What is a security chip on system 7?

Quoted from Flippermatt:

Sound board working has nothing to do with the mpu board - it's a separate mpu all on its own. GI working also has nothing to do with that.

Quoted from Flippermatt:

The digital error display seems to be partly broken.

Assuming it is showing either a 5 or 9, these both indicate memory protect failure - coin door was closed. #5 also indicates possible bad IC20, the flipper rom which is the operating system for the game. If that's bad, it's never going to work.

A usual culprit is bad rom sockets. You need some more diagnostic tools though before continuing to shotgun various parts of the board hoping it will work. Vid's bulletproofing guide and pinwiki will help here as well as the pincoder eproms, and a logic probe/scope. You have to work methodically from the start of clock signals, etc. into the 6808 and out from there. There's no "do this, it fixes that" for system 7.

Pretty easy to build vs. perpetual random guessing

I could fix you up with a Pincoder and Andre Rig/ROM for testing too. (or just sell me the FPII)
