Quoted from Pinchroma:I'm not an EE. Hogbog (Eric) is your man
Fast changing current draws from 139 different 300mA drawing RGB LEDs causes a spike voltage as the current changes. A symptom of the property called Inductance. Solvable in a few ways, the first being to use a voltage regulator, the second being to use large capacitors to store energy, reducing the amount of energy swing from the boards to the power supply. The LEDs themselves don't care about voltage spikes or irregularities, but the controller chips originally used in this design are not as robust as I would have liked.
The Hobbit design will be much better. Trust me.
