As the title states I finally picked up a fairly decent Surf Champ last night. It has minor paint separation on the backglass near the game over area as well as the typical wear at the kicker and one slingshot flipper plastic is broken, all in all not mint but certainly a great player.

I picked it up from a nice lady who said her dad and a friend both went out and bought one each in 1980. It has 100,000+ plays but looks more like a 20,000 play machine. There are a couple arcade service stickers so it was definitely on route but doesn't look like it. She said it spent a lot of time with the family and has been through a few moves but it lived it's life in the Seattle area.

Pics will be below but before that I could use a couple decent pics of where the white relay/component labels are attached. I'm sure I can figure it out but some pictures of where they're labeled would be sooooo much quicker. Right now I have a ziploc bag full of labels. Basically every label has fallen off for the exception of the yellow relay letters.

Any help would be great, thanks

Okay, I guess you need to be bribed by a couple more pics...

There's a lot of corrosion on that spinner bar... and the rubbers are disintegrating before my eyes.

Looks like a very good restoration candidate! Is there a lighter area where the labels used to be? (usually is)

#6 10 years ago

I found one and played it just the other day! Pretty fun. I'm not a huge EM guy but I like variety so I believe I will pick it up soon. My problem is that it needs some love and I have 3 games right now and I can't play any of them do to different parts of restoration.

Yep there's some spots that look like there used to be a sticker there... What would you guys suggest I use to stick them back on? Kids glue stick?

I was having a problem with the game not ending or going into game over... I think I found the reason

That's what I use Jason and they are still holding after a couple years.

What relay did that coil belong to?

I believe he already mentioned he was having problems with the "Game Over" so it would be that Relay.

well at least he still has his hair...... I use craft rubber cement for most labels, letting it set up a bit before applying the label (works on relays too)

#14 10 years ago

I also use a glue stick (Elmer's I believe). Seems more common to find the labels in the bottom of the cabinet than still sticking on the relay brackets, so putting them all back in place is familiar territory. And even the ones that look like they're still sticking in place often pop right off at the slightest touch, so those get re-glued too.

I usually refer to the schematic or manual to match the label to the relay or coil (as needed; after doing several some you just know). The coil type, function, and type/number of switches is usually enough to match the right label to the coil.

Sometimes I put them back on as I go, but often I'll just gather them up and do them all as the last part of a rebuild/restore.

If the lighting is just right, you can usually see a 'shadow' on the metal where the label had been, to know where to place it back.

Jason,
Be clear, or maybe I am Thick ?
What is it EXACYLY that you want us to provide you with ?
I am guessing you want a picture of the Bottom box that shows you the placement of the labels ?

Is that what you need ? detailed pictures of the relays with the corresponding tag next to it ?

If I am wrong, LMK what it is you are looking for / I have a SC and will see what I can do 4 U

Hey Ken,
Yep, I am a back and forth guy, I think Both of the forums each have good things to offer, As you can see, I am a total EM guy, so I fit better at RGP.
I also like pinside for its posting activity , lost of interesting people and postings.

Occasionally I am able to offer a little bit of help to my Pinside EM brethren. I personally don't get wrapped up in the RGP vs Pinside drama. As I said Both have many good things to offer us Pinheads.

I have been here a while, but thanks for the welcome just the same.

I guess what I was looking for are pictures of the relays etc to show the exact placement of these labels. Some spots I can tell but most I can't as the machine is really clean and shiny inside. Even just a couple places would give me an idea. I could look at another one of my machines to I guess. This is all my OCD talking btw.

Correct Ken, it was the Game Over relay. I've noticed that the only portion of the backglass that has damage is right behind the Game Over lights. Taking that and the toasty relay into account, it seems to me that this poor machine spent a lot of its time in a game over state. Oh well, she's cleaning up real nice.

Way to go Jason.

It looks to be in good condition to begin with and just needs some good ol' TLC.
