Well, it's been a long road. I purchased and paid for the machine back in late November and just took delivery of it this past Saturday. The pin was such a great deal that I was buying it with the intention of having it shipped from Denver. In the meantime, friends of mine in Bismark, ND (thanks John, Mark and Mark's wife) got wind of my purchase and offered to pick the machine up in Denver and bring it to me, as long as I could wait until after the holidays to receive it. Well, I agreed as it saved me $400. Little did I know how hard that nearly 2 month wait was gonna seem. Well all that's over now and the machine is here, set-up and plays great. I give you, my new favorite pin,The Flintstones:

Quoted from paulohotline:

Congrates dude, super fun PIN. Love your line-up there, Congo is definately my fav especially when it kicks in with Midnight madness!

Thanks man. Taking pin pics in the dark always reminds me that I need to fix the damned GI in the backglass on my Congo. Half of it doesn't even light up (new bulbs), making it look like a dark dog in any lineup pics I take. Never made it to midnight madness, I'm just happy to earn a free game now and then.

#6 11 years ago

Really? Is there an internal clock I need to check to make sure the pin knows what time it is? Crazy.

#13 11 years ago
Quoted from paulohotline:

Hey dude, don't cheat, do it at Midnight! It blows your mind!

I won't cheat, and I'll be sure to let my wife 'discover' it first. She'll go nuts.

#15 11 years ago
Quoted from paulohotline:

Haha, she is going to freak out. Make sure you let loose a couple of "Oh my God, what did you do?" Hee hee

I won't be able to talk over her screams. I'll then have to wait and tell her what it was after she comes to.

#17 11 years ago
Quoted from bjoechamp:

Congratulations! I love the use of the apron!

Yeah, it goes great with the theme, same as the speaker grill area. My favorite part are the bedrock buildings, I need to read up on lighting mods for those babies.

#21 11 years ago
Quoted from bjoechamp:

You should, that would look amazing. I have seen custom artwork for the playfield and backglass on this forum, people are starting to give this game the love it deserves!

Yep already bought my alternative translite. I think the game is killer.

#22 11 years ago
Quoted from FLpinball:

Congrads! Always been interested in that game but have never played

Check out some Youtube vids. You get a good feel for the music and the overall feel of the game while watching those "player's perspective" vids. Nothing beats actually playing one though. Getting into "The Machine", bowling a strike, the sweet wrap-around ramps, all good.

#23 11 years ago

BTB, Flintstones owners, does the big Bronto head do anything? Or is it just for looks? Seems like it should be used as some sort of crane or something.

#35 11 years ago
Quoted from jalpert:

I'm so glad your happy with it! It's always nice to know it found its way home safely.

Love it. Thanks again Mike.

#36 11 years ago
Quoted from SpOoKyRiDeS:

Congrats! Myself and others have produced custom old-school cartoon drop target decals.

This sounds awesome. How do I get the drop target decals. Do you have any extra?

Quoted from SpOoKyRiDeS:

The Bronto Head had an led mod bought from Europe and lights up the tail skin.

Need to read up on this.

Quoted from SpOoKyRiDeS:

You can also "light" up " Bedrock" in tapping into the GI thru both sides although the left has a hole to insert a socket while the right doesnt. Anywho...have fun and enjoy! A sleeper game that others are discovering!...~Spooky

One side accepts a socket and the other doesn't? What did you do on that side? Drill a hole in the bottom?

#39 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Awesome pick up! Just sold mine a few weeks ago, sad to see it go as it was very nice. Game is perfect for a subwoofer, expecially during multiball

Yours went to MN as well, yes? I saw yours, I never woulda let that one go.

#42 11 years ago

Well I started buying parts in anticipation of an on-going shop job. I am starting with the plastics, as they are larger and some are broken, missing screws/nuts and/or mounted wrong. I received 2 NOS (or repro) plastics with the machine. First up, the plastic under the Joe's Diner billboard. Here is the extra plastic I was given:

DSC02592.jpgDSC02592.jpg

To replace this:

DSC02593.jpgDSC02593.jpg

Which was cleverly made from these two pieced together:

DSC02591.jpgDSC02591.jpg

#44 11 years ago
Quoted from daley:

That is a Lethal Weapon 3 slingshot plastic under your broken plastic..

I was hoping someone would identify it for me, thanks.

#46 11 years ago

My Animated H-B translite arrived yesterday. I love it:

Better than this:

#51 11 years ago

Started the LED process tonight. What a tedious task. Only have the playfield about 1/4 done but it already looks soooo much nicer.

#53 11 years ago

Started the LED process tonight. What a tedious task. Only have the playfield about 1/4 done but it already looks soooo much nicer.

And here are a few pics. First, the entire playfield with about 1/3 LEDs, 2/3 555's:

DSC02598.jpgDSC02598.jpg

Here you can see the difference in the 2 sling plastics. The left one is now LEDed and actually looks purple instead of white!

DSC02600.jpgDSC02600.jpg

#55 11 years ago
Quoted from daley:

The color difference in the sling is because you are using cool white LEDs. If you want brighter white go with the warm white ones.

I like the look of the LEDs. I meant the sling actually looks purple like it should, the incandescent one looks yellow/white instead of purple.

#57 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Use purples under the slings as well. Purple under plastics makes it pop and retain natural colors the best surprisingly

Yep, I believe you are right. I ordered a bunch of bayonet style purples this morning. I only ordered bayonet style frosted and flat top whites with my first order. All the color LEDs I chose were wedge based on that order. This is my first LED job.

#58 11 years ago

BTB, where would I get spot lights, and if I did, where would you put them on this machine? I'm thinking the Joe's Diner sign needs one. Anywhere else?

#62 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

I don't have any sweet pics of game in darkness to show LEDs, bummer.

Dude that is

gorgeous.jpggorgeous.jpg

#67 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Thanks bill. Glad you had me add to both sides for lighting, definitely was pretty sweet!

What is needed to light the buildings? Where do you tie it into the wiring?

#69 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Same as adding a spotlight. Just tie it into a GI socket under the playfield. Each building as a 555 socket in it like I linked above and screwed into building on the inside. I can't find a pic, but again maybe billyd will snap you one someday

OK, thanks for the info. Yeah, he has invited me over to check it out in person actually.

#72 11 years ago

Congratulations. Late to the party, but I always thought this was a cool looking pin (With the HB translite you put in).

Thanks! Well, I got a little further on the playfield before I ran out of time. I'd say this is about 2/3 complete:

DSC02602_zps3949bd68.jpgDSC02602_zps3949bd68.jpg

#73 11 years ago

And I got about 2/3 of the translite done before I ran out of Frosted whites:

DSC02607_zps521aa84a.jpgDSC02607_zps521aa84a.jpg DSC02608_zps80717ae2.jpgDSC02608_zps80717ae2.jpg

I especially like the way the blues, purples and reds enhance certain colors that the regular 555's kinda just washed out.

Colored and white LED's:

DSC02605_zpsc3a20d27.jpgDSC02605_zpsc3a20d27.jpg

555's:

DSC02594.jpgDSC02594.jpg

I still have to figure out how to light the top center area up, as there are no sockets up there near the key. Those are the only real dark spots I can see.

#74 11 years ago

Can someone link me to the light up Bedrock mod?

#76 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Sounds interesting, don't think I've seen that one!

The Bedrock buildings. You said you've lit them up before. I'm just looking for a mini tutorial.

#78 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Oh, lol my bad! I thought there was a different pre-made mod.

Hahahahahaha, I was like, who is this guy? Isn't he the one that was talking about it yesterday?

Quoted from jrivelli:

I suppose here is what I did
1. Take off buildings. Use a razor blade to cut a small square in the bottom of any building that does not have room to fit in a 555 light socket
2. Connect 2 wires to a GI bulb under the playfield. I use stranded wire instead of solid core so it won't break as easy. Solder or alligator clip wires to the same GI bulb. Route wires up through playfield and onto side of the cabinet. Use your best judgement to hide them and route them up there. On the left side I went through a pre-made hole and under wireform to side of cab. Cut wire to length and solder to each leg of the lamp socket. Bend the lamp socket base as needed to fit the light into the building through hole you made.
3. I screwed in the lamp socket to bottom of building and bend in the light through hole I made. I think ultimately using a frosted LED would give the nicest glow here.
If I still had the pin I could take pics, but know it really is pretty simple. Just adding more GI lights basically to what is already there and extending them with wires to place where you would like. It's mostly a time consuming thing. Each building has 3 lights so that's 6 wires needed, 2 for each light. Just get a roll at radio shack or something. Hope that helps! I didn't find any tutorial on this, just did it.

Awesome, that's what I needed. Thanks!

#82 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Biggest problems to look for btw:
1. Make sure wire is under wireform. I had too much at first and it was bunch up abit and hit the ball rolling down wireform.
2. Make sure when opening or closing PF that you don't catch the wire on the cab and pull it out. Almost did that at first when I was first putting wire in and it was too long.
3. Use black wire and black mini zipties to secure wire. It will keep it organized, neat and not catch on things.
I wish you could simply send me your buildings and I could hook it up. I'd gladly do it free, no problem. I'm sure you'll be good!
Post some pics of your results!

I actually removed both 'skylines' and have them in the sink where I am scrubbing them clean. I could send them to you, but I think I got this. I just have to order the parts. Thanks for all the help.

#84 11 years ago

Got some more work done this weekend. Finished LEDing the playfield and almost finished the back box:

DSC02618_zpsca5c7c1c[1].jpgDSC02618_zpsca5c7c1c[1].jpg DSC02627_zps125b02df[1].jpgDSC02627_zps125b02df[1].jpg DSC02626_zpsc137e68f[1].jpgDSC02626_zpsc137e68f[1].jpg

I ran out of the frosted LEDs so I am waiting to order a bunch more of every style for a little more experimenting.

#85 11 years ago

Also got to install my (almost) fully populated, brand new coin door from Pinball Life.

Before:

DSC02614_zpsce93fe69[1].jpgDSC02614_zpsce93fe69[1].jpg DSC02615_zps9f94595d[1].jpgDSC02615_zps9f94595d[1].jpg DSC02586[1].jpgDSC02586[1].jpg

After:

DSC02611_zpsbcf1c417[1].jpgDSC02611_zpsbcf1c417[1].jpg DSC02622_zpsd0586e87[1].jpgDSC02622_zpsd0586e87[1].jpgDSC02612_zps152f70d2[1].jpgDSC02612_zps152f70d2[1].jpg

Man did that $135 save me a ton of work trying to find and restore a used one. Thanks Terry.

#86 11 years ago

Also began cleaning the inside of the cab and scrubbing the transformer and wiring. This about 1/2 way through:

DSC02609_zpseefd131f[1].jpgDSC02609_zpseefd131f[1].jpg DSC02613_zps54446776[1].jpgDSC02613_zps54446776[1].jpg

Thanks. I was also able to finally mount my Joe's Diner Billboard. I could only find the front bracket for the billboard, so I just bought 2 of them and altered one. For the back bracket, I just twisted one of the front brackets a bit and used a black zip tie (until I can find a better solution). I also inverted the front L-bracket (long side down) so that the sign faces the player's perspective more (the front 'leg' is set back an extra half inch). It now sticks out over the right ramp entrance a bit more, but after playing several games I found this not to be an issue with ball travel. I just like being able to see it better. I secured the front bracket with a tiny Bally/Midway carriage bolt from an arcade coin door.

#90 11 years ago

I then turned my attention to the start and buy-in buttons. I noticed that the buy in button never lit up when the machine signalled you could buy in, and pushing the button did nothing anyway. When I went inside I found the wiring and quick disconnects for the buy in button just hanging there, but someone had soldered 2 wires to the micro switch and then hacked them into the wiring near the interface board. I removed all the hacks, then removed both buttons and replaced them with new chrome-collared LED buttons. I chose blue for start and yellow for buy-in just cuz I liked the color combo. Once I hooked them all up, both lit up and both did their jobs again:

DSC02639_zpse3b8f5ed.jpgDSC02639_zpse3b8f5ed.jpg DSC02640_zps4a88b09a.jpgDSC02640_zps4a88b09a.jpg // Error: Image 71890 not found // DSC02610_zpsbce1bd59.jpgDSC02610_zpsbce1bd59.jpg

#91 11 years ago

Next I decided I'd start trying figure out the best way to light up the Bedrock buildings.

DSC02633_zps19b08b7e.jpgDSC02633_zps19b08b7e.jpg

I drilled 3 1/2" holes into each building section on both skylines, then borrowed a small bulb harness from a Jungle King arcade machine.

DSC02638_zps7a0a7aab.jpgDSC02638_zps7a0a7aab.jpg DSC02637_zps594b276e.jpgDSC02637_zps594b276e.jpg

I set it up and hooked the wiring into one of the GI sockets just to test. It worked:

DSC02635_zpsaf2cfdd7.jpgDSC02635_zpsaf2cfdd7.jpg DSC02636_zpsec558a97.jpgDSC02636_zpsec558a97.jpg

Now to order the parts to do this permanently.

#94 11 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

I am not familiar with the game but am guessing that the post under the right diner plastic is missing a rubber sleeve? That would protect the area in from of the ramp entrance.
Maybe not...
but figured I'd share my thought as it may help you save from some crazy air balls and broken bits or atleast from beat up balls.

I am sure it is. There were a lot of things missing. I find something new every day, but that's half the fun.

#96 11 years ago
Quoted from Turboderf:

What kind of light bulb did you use for the houses and where did you tie in the wiring for the lights to reg. GI ? looks great can you post a pic of the top of the machine plastic Im missing some thing there. i just add a Dino light Mod to mine looks great and also added a small strip of yellow on the that corner left wheres its dark just glued under the glass plastic.

I'll be using either frosted or superbright LEDs. These are concave LED's that I am testing with.

#98 11 years ago
Quoted from daley:

Might want to try out some pop bumper 4+1 LEDs. I would think they would work well in this application since you want the whole building lit up.

Thanks for the suggestion. I may try different colors as well.

#99 11 years ago

Now all my flashers are intermittent. Sometimes they work in test, sometimes they don't. Also, how many strings of GI are there? I have one string that does nothing in test, while there are no bulbs visibly out when the game is on. Is one string supposed to be empty?

#101 11 years ago
Quoted from Turboderf:

i think the coin door needs to be closed for the flasher to work in test and they flash dim

Really? How would you be able to access or advance the tests with the door closed?

#104 11 years ago

Yeah, I guess I forgot about the other buttons advancing things. Sounds good, I'll try it tonight.

#105 11 years ago

OK, I tried the tests with the door shut, and the flashers work, but only at like half strength. Also, the flippers, start, launch and buy in buttons do nothing once the test is going. So they work, but they should be brighter in test, shouldn't they?

1 week later
#107 11 years ago
Quoted from jrivelli:

Use purples under the slings as well. Purple under plastics makes it pop and retain natural colors the best surprisingly

Finally got my recent order and was able to try this out. Yep, you were right.

Before (one 1LED Frosted White/1 555 incandescent):

DSC02598.jpgDSC02598.jpg DSC02600.jpgDSC02600.jpg

After (2 purple Superbright 3LEDs):

DSC02657_zpsdc24302c.jpgDSC02657_zpsdc24302c.jpg DSC02658_zpscddf7e0a.jpgDSC02658_zpscddf7e0a.jpg

#109 11 years ago
Quoted from Turboderf:

nice i love LEDS ..... i just started working on my topper will post pics when im done

Topper you say? Sounds cool. I actually thought about buying both sets of Bedrock buildings and mounting those in conjunction with some lights, Flintstones figures and a back drop and using that as a topper.

#111 11 years ago
Quoted from Turboderf:

i did mod my buildings in the with leds after seeing yours

I'll actually be starting to wire those permanently tonight. Cannot wait to get that done, add some spotlights (the 'machine' area in the back is so dark) and some EL wiring to the ramps (gotta get that neon look going with the 50's feel of Bedrock). I bought pink and blue post covers to replace the black ones, and purple star posts to replace the dull-looking orange ones.

#119 11 years ago

I finally added a spotlight for the Joe's Diner sign. The cool thing is that it also illuminates the bowling alley. I attached it on a 1.5" post screwed in to the middle of the Fred's Choice A plastic area. I ran the wires next to the ramp gate/trigger wires and followed them out the bottom of the play field through the hole they exit. I tied the wires into the GI bulb terminals under the long purple and yellow plastic on the left of the playfield. Turned out perfect:

DSC02661_zps5fec28bd.jpgDSC02661_zps5fec28bd.jpg DSC02666_zps6c9cb306.jpgDSC02666_zps6c9cb306.jpg DSC02660_zps4d219b48.jpgDSC02660_zps4d219b48.jpg

#120 11 years ago

And just look at the difference one spotlight makes:

DSC02598.jpgDSC02598.jpg DSC02659_zps48d3df8b.jpgDSC02659_zps48d3df8b.jpg

#121 11 years ago

Can you take a pic of the top of your machine area? I'm missing something. I just have the studs with rubbers around them, but no plastic cover? Is anything missing on yours? Thanks.

I tried to add punctuation to your questions, so that I might better figure out what you were asking, but I am still not sure. The plastic star posts I am talking about are under the sling plastics on the lower part of the play field. I replaced the dull orange ones with purple ones:

DSC02662_zpsf7acf18b.jpgDSC02662_zpsf7acf18b.jpg

I also added rubber pink rubber post covers to the metal posts at the entrances to the ramps. One of mine was missing, and the other was basic and boring black:

DSC02661_zps5fec28bd.jpgDSC02661_zps5fec28bd.jpg

#122 11 years ago

Does anyone know what #string the Fred's Choice bulbs are on? None of mine are working (neither A, the A flasher, B or C, and they were 2 weeks ago. I know I blew a solenoid fuse when I accidentally touched a wire to the lock down receiver while lifting the playfield, but I changed the fuse in question and the solenoids were back. I have looked over all fuses and don't see any blown ones.

#124 11 years ago
Quoted from sneljo82:

I finally got my Flintstones too!!!! Nice pin, fun to play and foruntately a bit more easier gameplay than my LOTR and spiderman which is nice for a change!

Cool, yeah it's a great game. Funny, my Flintstones was a reimport from Europe. Musta been a hit over there.

#126 11 years ago
Quoted from sneljo82:

Nah not really a hit over here... Most people prefer other games. I think it's underrated, has a lot of nice gameplay in it and there aren't any pins with the ramps ging behind the flippers like this.
Mine is now cleaned, got new rubbers in it and new flipper units. I am planning to do the lighting of the houses as well and allso lit up the whole apron. Have ordered some figures from the movie (about 1,5 - 2 inches high) and will place these on the playfield. Leds are in order...
To your question, i don't think those lights belong to one string. However you can find the lampmatrix in the manual. If you don't have a manual, check on ipdb.org (or i can sell you a manual, i have 2 manuals for FS)

I've got a manual, but it's at home, and I'm at work. Just hoping for an easy answer before I start messing around.

#128 11 years ago
Quoted from sneljo82:

oh and flashers aren't in the lampmatrix. As i read your question again, i believe it are all flashers that don't work. Flashers have a seperate fuse. I believe nr. F103 or 104. Flashers allso only work when the coindoor is closed. (due to the switch on the coindoor which cuts of high voltage when door is open)

Yeah, I know, but it's only THAT flasher that's not working, so I assume the bulb is bad.

#132 11 years ago

It's my second fav currently, though Congo isn't too far ahead of it. To put it in perspective, I own 4 pins. Though I turn them all on, I only ever play Congo and Flintstones anymore, While JP and TFTC just sit there looking pretty. Maybe I've become a Williams Snob after all. Speaking of which, I'd trade my TFTC and cash for a Creetch in a heartbeat. Any takers? Sorry to derail my own thread.

Oh, that's OK.

Thanks for the understanding.

#139 11 years ago
Quoted from ThatGuy:

I finally watched some video play of Congo. Wow. I know I would dig it big-time. Tell me more about it.

Congo is the best pin I've ever played. I love the jungle look, the smooth feel and the primal sounds. I sold my TOTAN to make room for my Congo and I've never looked back. Flintstones is almost as fun as Congo for different reasons. Congo is my serious pin, Flintstones is my silly pin.

#140 11 years ago

Started the EL wire ramp mods. I did the outside of the right ramp first. It looks great, but I tried using hot-glue first (wouldn't stick), super glue (wouldn't cure fast enough) and finally crazy glue gel. That seemed to have the best holding power, but it did leave a bit of a white residue here and there that I'll need to address. I used steel wool, a jeweler's screwdriver and a flame to get rid of most of it, then used polishing compound to buff the plastic back to clear. Not perfect yet, but I'll keep refining the method til I get it right. The ramp I have is in rough shape (cracked, missing some of the lip around the rim, etc), so I thought it would be a great ramp to experiment on. I will most likely buy a repro and then drill it for zip ties like TRON did. This works in the meantime.

DSC02673_zps649e4b7b.jpgDSC02673_zps649e4b7b.jpg DSC02676_zpsd34fd5b1.jpgDSC02676_zpsd34fd5b1.jpg

And entire playfiled shots.

Lights on:

Lights out:

DSC02669_zps6f54b1d0.jpgDSC02669_zps6f54b1d0.jpg

#144 11 years ago
Quoted from daley:

Love the rest of your lighting mods.
Also, do you have some GI not working or disconnected, because the playfield looks way to dark in some of your photos.

I did find one 2 position molex hanging disconnected under the play field but I can't seem to find it's mate if it has one. I assume that must be for some form of lighting.

#146 11 years ago

There should be a round plastic with some bones on it above the main machine disc. It's held on to the disc with 2 screws screwed into 2 standoffs.

#148 11 years ago

Finally got my buildings lit up. For those that make it sound like an easy 5 minute project, it isn't. The hardest part is getting all the sockets mounted, soldered and daisy chained in such a way that the terminals and wires are out of the way and sitting where you want them to be. The right side is easier, as more of the buildings sit behind the ramp. On the left one, the buildings sit right over the top of the ramp. Also, that square hole in the center isn't cut out for your convenience. It's actually cut out for an existing gate assembly, which also needs to fit in that space with the new bulb socket you're installing. I had to install and remove the left side buildings at least 5 times before I got everything routed and bent out of the way far enough or the ball would get caught in the left ramp. I also used shrink tubing on my connections so if they accidentally touched one of the metal support bars underneath, they wouldn't short themselves out. Here are some playfield pics, then views from the commercial side to residential, and vise versa:

And I added another spotlight. This one I attached to the middle post of the right ramp. I faced it toward the Brontosaurus and threw a green Superbright in it. Helps to light up the dinosaur and add some more light to the back of the playfield:

Looks good. What kind of LED's did you end up using? I really like how the left site looks and I like the glow of the right side, but you have three major bright spots.
I really like the green spot light

Ironically, I ran out of wedge based LEDs and had to stick old 555s in there for now. The hotspots look more intense in the pics. They're really not that noticeable in person.

that back plastic is not mounted right mine is mounted on the back board with lights behind it

This is how mine is mounted:

And I had to remove, resolder and repopulate the little light board in the back to light up the back corner. Every bulb was dead, cold solder joints everywhere. No wonder it was so damn dark back here. This helps tremendously:

Looks REALLY nice, man.

Thanks David. Nice to hear from you again. How's that Monster Bash of yours? Man I'd love to find one of those, though I'd be just as happy getting a decent Creetch for half the cost.

So did any of the pics posted or linked help you fine fellows?

Quoted from jrivelli:

My right buildings had the spot in the roof too since buildings are so flat. I wonder if you put the wide angle concave LEDs in them it would space out lighting and make it really even? Perhaps they are not bright enough those.
I have a ton and can send you some free of charge if you wanted to try it out?

You can send me 3 if you want, I won't complain. I just can't believe I ran out of them just before I finished the mod. Irony.

Quoted from daley:

The light board on all of them is flat, the plastic is still curved. The plastic being mounted differently is the only thing different on yours. Look at this picture, the blue plastic you are talking about is just the corner of the same plastic you have. and you can see in the wider shot the alcove with the lights behind it.

Yep, I think you're just Chasing Ghosts and Shadows.

I used to have a Creature (it's now Krajkerjac's 1,000,000 CFTBL). I miss it and would love to have another one in the collection someday. It's a sweet game and the classic drive-in theme is the bee's tits.

That's kinda what I think I'll think. I love classic Mid-Century Americana stuff. Trying to trade my TFTC + Cash for one right now.

OK, messed with the GI lighting in my backbox some more. I decided to use LEDs in the center area, and regular 555s in the surrounding translite. Which looks better?

Original translite, all incandescents:

New translite, all LEDs:

New Translite, mix of both:
