It was not obscure at the time, but Bullitt.

The chase scene only. The rest of the movie is a waste of celluoid.

    p973_v_v8_aa (resized).jpgp973_v_v8_aa (resized).jpg

It used to be you could find the complete chase scene in one video. Now you have to look around you can find all of the different parts. And hopefully you can find one to watch that some backyard 21st Century cinema photographer has not butchered to shit.

I finally bought the DVD just so I can watch the chase scene every once in a while.

    Chiefs

    A TV movie.

It is a hard title to find. I pull this out and watch it once a year.

It is one of those rare birds, like Hunt for Red October, where the movie is as good as the book.

THe critics panned Hoffa. I think it is Jack Nicholson at his finest.

Nor is Giant. Please get with the program.
What’s next? Rebel without a cause? The Ten Commandments?

    Quoted from TheLaw:

Sorry but chase scene in bullet is maybe the most over rated thing in cinema history, that car is moving like 15mph.

    Quoted from o-din:

Haha! I was trying to think of that one earlier as I saw it when it first came out. Great flick that still holds up today.
My fascination with horror movies pretty much started when I could barely walk watching Dark Shadows and any old horror movie they would throw on TV. From Mexican vampire movies to all the Universal classics, to of course all the Edgar Allen Poe classics staring Vincent Price.
This is one of my favorite's of his.[quoted image]

Off-Topic: You know what hurts? When you see Vincent Price in his earlier movies where he is not yet The Vincent Price.

Is the 1956 version of The Body Snatchers obscure enough?

    Screen Shot 2019-08-19 at 11.42.50 PM (resized).pngScreen Shot 2019-08-19 at 11.42.50 PM (resized).png

    Quoted from o-din:

I'll see your Invasion of the Body Snatchers and raise you with 1951's The Thing. With Marshall Dillon as the thing!
    [quoted image][quoted image]

    Yes! Mr. Gunsmoke himself !

I'll re-raise you with "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with my heartthrob Patricia Neal. Although, if I recall correctly, it was not all that obscure at the time.

If anybody wants to see some top quality video of Northrop Aviation's Flying Wing in action, WOW, has some great footage included. The general public did not know jack back then. When WOW came out in 1953, ALL of the Flying Wings had already been destroyed years earlier.

I'm going with "obscure" definitely synonymous with "B" grade low budget movie. We harken back to the days after WW II when the jet age and then the space age was up on us. Back when we still believed that Mars had hordes of little green men as a population. Back when we only dreamed of going to the moon.

Back when the car makers were all trying to make cars look like rocket ships.

We were completely mesmerized with what we then referred as Outer Space.

Hollywood did not disappoint. And delivered this gem.

    Steve McQueen at his finest.

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

It's not. "Obscure" means people don't know about it.

You are going to have to stop man.
    THE FUCKING BLOB?!?!
On which planet is it obscure? The one the Blob came from?

I'm sorry, Levi. I sort of figured that if a 45 year old movie, Thundebolt and Lightfoot, that I saw in the movie house in 1974 when it was brand new, and now it is on Netflix, and you are just now seeing it, I sort of figured if you considered T & L obscure then maybe I could slide a 65 year old movie, The Blob, past your cross hairs.

Even in the day, The Blob was not part of any conversation and most people reacted with surprise to learn Steve McQueen was in something other than Bullitt.

    Inherit the Wind 1961

It is about the Scopes Monkey Trial.

I saw this when I was a kid. There was a chimpanzee smoking a cigarette. For the next 50 years I could remember the chimp but not what movie it was. I think Netflix had it up briefly a couple of years ago. I did not know what it was about but then I saw my cigarette smoking chimp.

    Quoted from DennisDodel:

Maybe if the op would remove the word "classic" from the thread title people MIGHT understand better. "Favorite movies that are somewhat obscure".

I don't know, man. There are over 600 posts now and except for the few I have posted, most of these movies I have never heard of. Or I saw a flyer years ago and forgot all about it.

I'm starting to think the only ones that might pass the obscure test are the slashers shown only at the drive ins.

    #630 4 years ago
    Quoted from vicjw66:

There is nothing obscure about Black Sunday, North Dallas Forty, or Krull. You have all made a mockery of this topic. May gawd have mercy on your soles.

I thought Krull was a ultra rare pinball machine.

    #631 4 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

It seems that virtually every movie is "obscure" to you, which is great- you have hundreds and hundreds of "obscure" movies to seek out and watch, and maybe saw a lot of good stuff in this thread you've never heard of.
A good baseline is that if a movie is Oscar-nominated, a cultural touchstone, or made hundreds of millions of dollars (either now or adjusted), it's probably not "obscure." About half of the movies mentioned in this thread would qualify as "not obscure."
I think "classic" is a little more subjective than "obscure."
For me it's a lot easier to list an "obscure" movie I've seen than an "obscure classic." I just saw Black Sunday, and it's pretty terrible. But it sure is obscure![quoted image]

I forgot all about Black Sunday. I do remember seeing all of the newspaper ads giving it the hard sell. And then it was gone. When Jaws came out everybody was talking about that one at work. Black Sunday? Not a word.

I agree what you say about baselines being established with Oscar nominations and monies earned but I don't pay attention to Oscars and did not bother tracking dollar amounts at IPDB.com. So, some slip thru the cracks.
