A 40 year old playfield will have it's wood fibers 95% already compressed. So dimpling after clearcoating will be minimal.
A new playfield will take 10,000 plays to start to level out all the dimples, and of course the glossier the playfield, the more the dimples stand out.
AND just like an auto.....if the playfield is a repro, and the backglass is a repro, and the cab is a repro, the plastics are repros, and the MPU/driver/sound boards are repros, and all the pops and drops are repros - then it's not a actually a Bally/Williams/Gotllieb at all - it's a reproduction with a used wiring harness.

and technically would not be considered a restoration, as nothing was restored. Swapping in aftermarket parts to look like new, is not restoring anything.
