Finally got Fathom home and running.
Few teething issues to sort out hopefully soon.
Player 2 display flickering and showing same as credit display

Multiple switches need adjusting.

Back targets sitting above play field, should they be flush when down?

Tilting often even on start up, but tilt switches all look and measure ok.

Any help appreciated.

Such a beautiful machine....

Quoted from TractorDoc:

The way it is wired in I want to think it is added on; are my suspicions correct or is this a recommended configuration? Only two terminals on the bridge rectifier are tied into the board. I am trying to study the schematics but thought it appropriate to ask here as well.

If you were an operator back in the day... the bridge rectifier helped save the
lamp circuitry... Bally power supply was notorious for blowing up the lamp bridge.
It looks more like a backup plan should the main bridge go bad.
I wired my auxiliary bridge rectifier in parallel with the main lamp bridge.
( less stress on the diodes )
I never had to cute the traces on the PCB; like what you have.
I hope this helps.

Bit of a long shot here but anyone redo their fathom cabinet and just have their old one sitting around collecting dust ultimately destined for the junkyard? I’m looking for an old empty fathom cab... I actually would take it flattened... as I really want the wood for another project and would prefer the look of a cab with some patina for lack of a better word rather than me painting some new plywood... which is what I’ll likely end up doing if I can’t find an old doner cab.

Anyone have a set of repro plastics that they no longer need and would want to sell? If so, PM me!

Starting the Fathom play field harness run. 12 are signed up, room for 3 more. $225 plus shipping, everything you need to wire up a populated Fathom for grounds, GI, controlled lamps, switches and solenoids. Plugs for drops and pops, all plugs properly keyed.

Restoration is making progress. Finished soldering in the playfield harness today on the underside. Looking forward to the fun part -- populating the topside!

Playfield is back in the cabinet -- working thru some adjustments while I await for several orders of forgotten parts to arrive.

Restoration has reached a point where the playfield glass is installed and games are being played. Totally worth all the time and effort!

Quick question for you Fathom experts: will a AS-2518-61B Squawk & Talk work in a Fathom to replace a AS-2518-61A??

Yes, you can use an AS-2518-61B Squawk & Talk in a Fathom. Just make sure you have the jumper installed at location "FF", otherwise you'll get no sound. And jumper the Fathom sound ROMs accordingly.

Thanks for the confirmation, thought I had read this before but couldn’t find a reference.

Does anybody in here have a cabinet art file they wouldn’t mind sharing with me? I’d like to make my own stencils but don’t have an original cabinet to trace. Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Everyone,
I've had a few people ask for the CAD file I made to CNC cut a new lamp board for Fathom.

Here is a link to the AutoCAD DWG & DXF files as well as a PDF.
Feel free to download or copy anywhere else so it'll be available to anyone who needs it.

Thanks man! I love how smooth it plays too. This sucker needed a lot of dialing in... but it's just like butter now. All the shots feel so much better and that CPR playfield is a godsend.

That being said... there were some very specific adjustments required on the repro playfield. I should have done a better job documenting them, but just a word of warning to anyone using a CPR. Check and double-check those dimples and pre-drilled holes. The post markings behind the lower and top right pop bumpers are especially dodgy.

Just joined the club yesterday. A definite players game, but I am OK with that for now. The machine is almost 100% playable. The issue I am having is with the 3x green drop target. The solenoid to reset the bank in the up position is pushing the 3x target too high and the corner of the pivot arm is coming out of the slot. I tried lifting the 4x and 5x targets and they seem to have a stop the prevents them from being pushed too high. I do not see a physical stop though.

All 3 drop targets seem to be connected the same way to the arm and the 3x doesn’t seem any more “sloppy” than the others.

Here are 2 pictures. The first showing the target higher then the other 2 and the second picture showing the corner of the drop target arm out of the slot in the bank.

Is this common? Is there something I can do to prevent it?

Hard to tell from your pics but it looks like your missing the pivot bar on that mech. Compare the parts on the green to the blue one.

@thrillhouse Thanks for your suggestion. I checked and those are just standard holes; they are not used. Your comment helped me dig a bit deeper and I found that the arm is stopped by a slot in the bracket on the other side of the switch. The skinny end of the bracket is broken and it allows the arm to travel farther than it is supposed to and the target is stuck "Up"

I actually found this site that describes the issue:

https://www.aussiearcade.com/forum/pinball/pinball-restoration-s/solid-state-ss-pinball-restorations/93765-modified-bally-in-line-drop-target-bracket-and-why-it-works

Doesn't look like anyone actually makes these. I am going to have to try and fabricate a few of my own. Should be an interesting experience.

MAN!!! Some absolutely BEAUTIFUL Fathoms, guys!

I bought my first one probably 20+ years ago. Ended up trading it to a friend. Finally picked up another one just a few weeks back. Buddy finally got it all workin' 100%. Now it's time for a good cleaning and the replacement backglass I picked up installed.

It looks KILLER next to my Fireball II! I LOVE all the blue and all the red! Kinda in a weird spot, as they were bein' worked on. My dining room is my work area. lol Who needs a dining table? lol But wherever I put them, I think they'll be BFFs from here on out. LOL!!! That didn't sound TOO gay, did it? lol

Hey Guys,
I inadvertently came across a Bally FATHOM by pure dumb luck. Here is most of the story on how I came to own an original ONE owner 1981 Bally FATHOM. Technically now since I bought it its got one more owner but hey whose counting? It was just one of those dumb luck, right place right time situations. I chanced across the ad for the FATHOM while dorking around on FB. I chanced upon the listing about 36 minutes after it went active. I thought for sure it would be gone as it seemed like a good price for a nice looking pinball machine. I sent a message and then forgot about it and went about my day. At that point in time I knew nothing of the Bally Fathom. I didn't know how much it was worth nor did i know that it was a RARE and in demand/sought after pinball. Like I said DUMB LUCK. Back to the FATHOM. The lady and her daughter told me a bit about the machines history. That It was bought new in 1981 and lived its whole life in a nice dark basement game room in a mansion on top of Queen Anne. The daughter who i believe was around 45 years old told me that she couldn't remember a time when the Fathom wasn't a part of her life. The Mom was 83 and getting ready to move into a condo and was downsizing. The Ad was for $900. I messaged her not expecting a reply but after about an hour I got a call. I was shocked and didn't really know what to say to her as I hadn't really intended on getting a call back let alone buying a pinball machine that day. Life's funny that way. The Fathom is all Original everything. It lived in a dark game room all its life hidden away from the damaging rays of the sun so all of the colors are crisp, dark, rich, vibrant, etc. Its hard to explain but i think most of you know what I'm saying. I definitely think that this FATHOM is not your average Fathom to come on the market after scouring the internet the past day and a half. It seems that there are many many positives regarding this pin. One owner, hardly moved from one spot for almost 40 years, colors and sheen is like new. No damage from the sun or fading, playfield and back glass are beautiful original examples. I haven't done anything to the machine except for almost kill myself and 2 others trying to get this machine out of a mansion located on top of Queen Anne hill in Seattle. So steep and so many steps. I haven't even wiped the dust away. I'm waiting on feedback before I touch it.
I've had a lot of people coming at me about this machine. A lot of nice people have tried to steer me well which I really appreciate. A lot of offers as well. One of those guys told me to head over to PINSIDE to learn all about this Pin. Thanks guys here comes the pics! Look forward to hearing what experienced collectors think of this FATHOM. Thanks

Quoted from CADguy:

Hey Guys,
I inadvertently came across a Bally FATHOM by pure dumb luck.

Wow. That’s is really amazing. That is truly a find. Looks to have been serviced by a less then expert repair person, but nothing bad that’s visible. Will need new drop targets. Check for and remove any batteries on the CPU board. But Wow, great find.

Yes, do it now!

It does look to be a fantastic example of a fathom and the price is practically stealing it! It has two operator stickers on it and with the replace 1-2-3 targets I suspect it was operated at one point in it's life but that doesn't diminish it's value much from the look of the pictures. The likelihood of breaking all 3 of those targets in home use is quite low I suspect. Anyway, beautiful example, worth multiple times what you paid for... if the boards are in good shape, meaning no acid damage then even better. Congrats! Play the heck out of it and enjoy it, I miss mine.

Wow, that thing is nice. You’re in the 7-10k range, based on how quick you want to sell it.

Wanna trade for my warehouse fresh fathom?

#549 3 years ago

Thanks guys. I’ve been getting bombarded with offers to buy as well as trades for other pinballs. It’s pure craziness.

I made a sheet of Fathom spinner decals on vinyl, peel and stick. If anyone wants one (or more), just peel and stick on your spinner, PM me. Picture is of actual decal. I'd like $5 each to cover the cost of the vinyl and postage.
