The inline drop targets on my Fathom are giving me problems and I’m not sure where to begin trying to fix them. I have a new Altech MPU board and I have rebuilt all the connectors on the MPU.

At the start of each ball the game has no problem resetting the drop targets but sometimes fails to drop them down again as part of the cycle before ball launch.

Sometimes it will drop all but one of the top drops and none of the lower green drops.

Sometimes dropping the alternate colored drops on the left hand side will reset the upper inline drops instead of dropping one. Sometimes the left bank of alternating drops will kick out a locked ball in the upper saucer instead of dropping a drop target.

Sometimes the game will function flawlessly for hours. Sometimes it will be a non-stop train wreck.

It’s got issues for sure. Any ideas what to check?

this doesn't really help, but i tried an early model altek board in a Fathom to try and eliminate issues but it didn't work, wouldn't even boot, but worked fine in other pins.

Have you done a memory clear on the Alltek? All game select switches up except the 1st on the left. Turn game on and let run to the green LED flashes every second. Shut off and return the switches to Fathom game setting 0010001 "1" being up.

If that doesn't work try another MPU if your other Bally's have an Alltek.

Remove the Solenoid Expander board under the playfield on the left side near the lower left flipper. Reflow the connectors, including the relay tabs. Loose connections on this board (which are common) will cause erratic solenoid issues.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I think reflowing the connectors on the solenoid expander board fixed it!

I don’t know if I would ever have figured that out on my own. At least not before throwing more expensive “fix” attempts at the problem.

Thank you JethroP!

Yeah I'll be filing that one away in my memory. Good call.
