I am having sound issues on farfalla. I don’t know a whole lot but here’s what I’ve found testing. Looking at a sound map and running sound test All the 1408 DAC and 5220 speech chips sounds are working. It’s the AY-3-8910 sounds that are missing. I’ve also tried swapping ribbon cables and the issue still occurs. Looking at a previous thread I replaced the MF10CN chip in location 20. And also added another in the empty 2P position. Neither of these made a difference. I checking in the settings and background sound is on as well. Any other ideas of where to look?

I wish I had info to share on this one, but I'm having my own sound issues with Devil Riders, so going to follow along and see what folks say in your case.

All I can think of in your case right now is have you swapped the two PIA chips at 1H and 1M?

I haven’t but looking at them. There is a socket for them, not sure if that means they were added later or not, and they look newer.

I believe all the major IC's were in sockets from the factory, all the 40pin IC's on mine were sockets already and there's no sign of any repairs.

If you are still having trouble getting your sound board to work, I have a spare working one I don't really need already set up for Farfalla that I could send you. You can use that to compare against and swap chips with yours and fix it, or keep it and send me your old one. Mine does has a minor modification to double up the EPROMs and a small jumper to switch between English and Italian speach.

Can you post a picture of the sound board?

Does anyone know if the ay-3-8910 chip needs to be programmed? That’s where the sounds are missing and am thinking of ordering one but wasn’t sure if the chip needs to be programmed or is ready when I order it.

Also the two mc6821p chips. If I were to replace those. I can’t find them. Can anyone help me to maybe a link for both somewhere that I can buy. Preferable both ready as I have no way of programming chips.

There's no ROM in the AY-3-8910 sound generator, so it doesn't need to be custom programmed. What you buy off the shelf is ready to go.

You can find these chips you're after on ebay.

The 8910's, I have no idea where to find those.

6821's are getting trickier to find originals, but Jameco still stocks.

Here's a modern option for the 6821's also, jury is still out on if it's 100% compatible in all uses.
