Hello, I have a TAF with a failing screen. Just reseated the gray cables to and from the driver board with no change. Please let me know where I should start. I did search and found a few threads, but nothing that was a specific match to my issue.... at least that I can identify due to my inexperience with repair. Thank you.

I'd try a different DMD driver board, if you can.

Time for color.......

If the issue is the DMD driver board, color won't help.

Can you replace the driver board without impacting the other components? I saw something about ruining traces....but don't know what that means.

Do you have a working dmd that you can swap in to see how it behaves? It it works then you can eliminate dmd driver problems. Or alternatively, can you swap this one out to another machine?

The only machine I have that might work is a sttng. Does that work?

Yes. DMD, DMD driver board, and ribbon cables.

Regardless .... it needs color lol..

Let's say, I purchase a new driver board by rottendog just to have one one on hand, and because pulling parts from one machine isn't worth my time since its only $100 to my door....does it require any flashing/programming? Or is the graphics data elsewhere?

And yes bigd1979, I was going with a colordmd regardless. *grin*

Plug and play. Only 2 ribbon cables and couple connectors. The game code is on a chip on the cpu far left. This board is the upper right corner in backbox.
Did you try reseating the ribbon cable on the dmd itself? Pull off, press back on firmly. Study the red line on ribbon cable and put back the same way.

Try reseating this ribbon cable at all the board connections. Ribbon cable reseating (resized).jpg

Eric and Maniac: Super helpful posts. I'll be trying this first thing when I get back home tonight. Thanks guys!

DMD will be the next easiest to try if reseating ribbon cable doesn't help. DMD controller for last possibility.

My money would be on a bad RAM at U24 on the Dot Matrix Controller (A14039) board. Put it in display test. The final portion of the display test is "Paging" which tests the RAM.

There have been a few cases the paging error was due to the ribbon cable.

I re-seated the ribbon cable one connection at time, testing in between, and it turns out that it was the connection at the CPU board that needed a bit of cleaning.

Perfect advice and assistance. Thank you pinside members!
