Is there corrosion on the board?

sounds like a bad battery connection

Sometimes people don't notice how bad these 30 year old battery holders are. I've seen plenty of green corrosion, or even missing tabs. Any of that stuff might keep the settings from holding.

Its garbage. If you want I can come remove it from your house. I won't even charge you a removal fee.

on your mpu board, what number do you see on the 7 segment display?

what voltage do you have at the + & - tabs on the mpu board, your battery holder?
what voltage do you have at pin 24 on the RAM?

Fish Tales is a WPC game, there is no 7-segment on MPU board. And the RAM is 6264, 28 pin, so battery voltage can be checked between pins 14 (-) and 28 (+).

You're going to get that message right after you change the batteries. But, if you went in and set the date, turned it off and back on again and are still getting the message, it could be a few things.

    Dead battery or batteries
    Batteries installed incorrectly
    Corrosion on battery holder
    Broken battery holder contact pads
Corrosion on traces under or below battery holder
Cracked solder joints from battery holder to board

    ^^^^^^^

I was thinking to start with reflowing the solder joints if there is no corrosion

Might also take a look at section 6.11.3. I had the diode fail open on me and had similar symptoms.

Post pictures and we'll be the judge of that.

Thanks for correcting me and my apologies to all those that I mislead.
