I installed fresh new Duracell batteries about 3 months ago in my TZ and I haven't been playing it a lot lately. Like a week or more without powering on.
In that time it happened twice that it booted with Factory settings restored?!
It doesn't happen every time. If I power it off and back on right after or in the same day, week maybe it doesn't restore factory settings.
The batteries are new. But still if the batteries were bad it probably wouldn't act like that..
Any clues?

Corroded battery holder.

Could be as simple as bending the contacts so you making good contact with batteries. Chekc out the pin repair area for this, as it will show you how to test with a DMM if you're getting the correct connections & volts

So you may have something draining the batteries, or you have a bad battery holder. You need to test for voltages. Pin wiki covers this:

Do you think there was a split second in powered off state when the connection with batteries was lost due to corrosion?
