One more post: it has full LED lighting and I'll throw in the Sony sub it is hooked up to.
Quoted from pinball_erie:Upon looking at it, there is no x in the SN. It does have all the prototype roms, clear beacon, added flashers. I was told it was a prototype when I bought it. Either way it's a FAST machine in great shape.
According to IPDB, there is some ambiguity about which of the games were the original 10 prototypes that Steve Ritchie knew about. PROTO5 labeled ROMs, kind of hard to say. I have PROTO6 labeled ROMs in my Marilyn Taxi. Who really knows how many ROMs are labeled that way? The other characteristics about the flashers and domes are very common through early production. The X serial numbers and plain black background cabs seem extremely rare. Only 2 are actually registered on the Internet Serial Number Database. I think those would fetch something more if marketed properly, but how much more I couldn't say. Maybe it's nothing but an interesting backstory.
You are right, though, you do have a nice, clean looking example there. And I think it is priced fairly. GLWTS.
pinball_erie's F-14 is legit badd ass. Its near flawless and plays and looks great. I have bought 3 machines off of Shawn and he is a great seller and I have played this F-14 on numerous occasions. Very nice piece.
Oh boy. So I just picked up an F14 and it's in a much worse place than I originally thought. So I found a bag of coils with green and yellow sleeves that have all been taken off of the game at some point as evidenced by solder left on the lugs. The CPU is completely shot and there's a highly likely chance that +50v was shorted and trashed the logic. With this in mind, combined with the coin box full of old coils, I'm fairly certain that the previous owner wires something incorrectly. Would someone be kind enough to compare the wiring on my coils to theirs?
Also, what else could cause a short like this to blow out an entire MPU? What do I need to look for to ensure this doesn't happen again?
The photos, in order represent:

Your wiring looks good, at least on the flippers. The lower right flipper has had some of the wires changed out completely, but it is wired correctly. You have solid red wire in place of factory white/purple wires.
I just rebuilt my flippers, and while I'm still troubleshooting a problem on mine, I have become familiar with how it should look. Yours look good.
If your wiring is long enough, I would reverse those flipper coils.
Putting the diode end opposite the coil stop will save you some problems, a little further down the road.
Quoted from Fifty:Before I start hunting all over the internet
Are you specifically looking for new ones, or are you just missing some? I've got a bunch from that F14 playfield I scrapped a while back which you can have for nowt if they're any use. PM me your address and how many you want if they're of interest

Joining the club. Picked it up last night from the Arcade in Brighton.

That does look like a clean one....congrats!!
Quoted from Fifty:Uh… why do you only have one transformer under the PF? I have two.
I have no idea. It plays so not sure what a second one would do.
I have found a few issues.
Game starts up normal and plays fine. Play a few games and the background music starts to get slower and distort and gets scratchy. Any ideas? When I let it cool down the sound comes back.
Plus the extra segments on the upper displays is kinda annoying. Any guesses would be much appreciated.

From what I have read, the second transformer is a Canadian thing. Something about different regulatory issues.
Only one is needed. The second one simply burns electricity, and makes the Canadian government feel better.

Ha..That's funny...never knew that.
Quoted from TrainH2o:second one simply burns electricity, and makes the Canadian government feel better.
I think the US government buys the electricity from Quebec and then sells it back to us so if any government is feeling better I would guess the USA.
Never knew about this isolation transformer. When I attended a pin show here in Ottawa a few months ago I tipped my pin on it's end and the damn isolation transformer nearly broke from it's screws and fell to the bottom. It held on with only one half screwed in screw. I'm taking that thing out tomorrow and selling it.
Thanks for the links!

...but I have only 1 transformer on my F14 (and Getaway for that matter). %)
I can tell you that I never heard of having to install an extra transformer into a unit that already has a transformer (unless the voltage requirements are different) and I deal with CSA (Canadian Standards) fairly often as we bring in a lot of "foreign" equipment where I work.

It's an Ontario Hydro thing. This is the post from google rec.games.pinball;
"Way back when in Canada, many Provinces required an isolation
transformer for safety. Not needed so you can usually just unplug &
run the prestine original cord to the wall. Another thing way back in
the early electronic pin days in Canada, was that you couldn't have
bare wood under the transformer & power board. So the operators had to
roll on some gray or black paint to prevent a possible fire. That was
another useless thing which was abandoned, aolong with Ontario Hydro
approval instead of CSA or the USA version UL. Thank goodness for free
trade which has done away with stupid seperate approval agencies, so
now UL or CSA is good in Canada. We had ULC also in the past."
Quoted from Elliott99:I need to make a new plastic to go above the diverters, please could someone measure the length of the "L" in the across the playfield direction?
Thanks,
Elliott.
I traced the top sction of mine out for you . The top part of the page is the top of the plastic and so is the left side. Let me know if you need anything else.

...ah, that explains it - Ontario Hydro likes to create their own rules in addition to CSA (they have their own sticker too that it "passes").
I have seen some of the old Nortel equipment that has the Ontario Hydro sticker on it...
I don't think this happens any more, especially since some of their isolation transformers have caught fire. Not to mention some of their 'precautions' are now listed as 'useless'.
Has anybody on this forum added bulbs to the Tom Cat spot targets at the upper play field? I just switched over all the lamps to LEDs on mine, and thought it seemed really strange that the same lighting detail wasn't in place at all the spot target areas. Doesn't seem like there's a practical reason why they wouldn't have done this from the factory.

I added the flashers back in and thought the same thing about the GI by the targets. The only thing I could think of was that they were worried the bulbs would shatter from the upper flippers.
I've noticed this too as I'm sorting out my new playfield. There is a post a while back where someone added in the "missing" ones.

Not sure whether to do the same or not....
Quoted from sethbenjamin:Has anybody on this forum added bulbs to the Tom Cat spot targets at the upper play field?
Yes, I did that to mine. To keep the color theme going, I put red leds on the red targets side and blue on the blue side.
If you have your playfield out of the cabinet I recommend adding the lights, makes a difference and it will be easier to install with the playfield out.
Does anyone had a high res pic of the Yagov/Tomcat portion of the playfield unpopulated? Working on a project, want that art.
Look good
Just above the first 'i' in Williams on the first one you can see the glare from my window when I took the photo.... maybe you want to edit that out?
Quoted from agodfrey:Ok last one before the high res. Have a great weekend everyone!

This looks killer. I was just thinking today about trying to find some to print out. Can't wait to see the hi res ones.
In case you're interested, a good font match for the Tomcat logo is "Blackoak Std", although I think it'll be too wide for the card unless you can stretch it a bit. Its the font I have for "SECOND SORTIE" on my custom cab decals.
But regardless of the font, these are cool... Nice work!
The font on the rules is from the stock rules card which I like to do on all the cards I create. Stand by for links and the new info card font
Ok......print ready files. v2 is the Top Gun Font. v3 is the Blackoak font. I also have cards for Swords of Fury, Blackout, Gorgar, and Time Warp. I recommend v2 of SOF. It has Brian Schmidt listed for his musical contribution.
Now, these are ready to be submitted as a 4x6 print to Walgreens, CVS, or any High Street photo store (for Snux.....umm......ASDA might do prints I think) I'm happy to help if you want to print these and need different dimensions.
So submit it to CVS (or wherever) as a 4x6 print. Then cut off the black portion and pop it on your machine. Let me know if you have any issues.
