Just bought a F14 Tomcat on ebay, for $2500, I think I overpaid for the machine as I got it home and wow this thing needs major work, I currently have a parts list going on Marcos and I am just short of $500 not counting the LED kit I just bought, One major issue I am having is the "launch" slot upper right is not working properly, the machine stalls and eventually spits the ball out after about 40 seconds or so really makes the game slow if you hit this area. any ideas? I did notice some of the snubber relays are smoked and counted 3 of them in the machine with the same visual black marks, I was going to replace all three, along with new coil solenoid. This is me just taking a guess to the problem, I am a electrician and this is my third pinball I have owned but its been 4 years since the last machine I had my hands in, so I'll have to get back in the groove of things. I posted some photos, any thoughts to problem or as to how much I should invest in this particular model. Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the appearance of the snubber relays. If you have a failure, you'll know it, and I HAVE replaced relays on F14 Tomcat, but not often. It's a rare point of failure. Far, far more frequently when there is a relay on the bottom of the playfield you'll find broken solder connections instead of a bad relay.

F14 Tomcat has always been a desirable pinball, but a difficult to service pinball.

When you've properly gotten a F14-Tomcat working, you have accomplished something that the average pinball tech would find very challenging. It's a great machine to really get your system 11 repair skills perfected.

As for the ball just resting... Switch test is your friend. The fact that it eventually ball searches and launches the ball means that it's not the mechanism, it's the machine not knowing the ball is there.

Almost every F14 Tomcat I've worked on has had prior work in the 'special solenoids' upper right corner of the CPU. I frequently find the IC chips have been replaced (put in a socket). I'm just mentioning this because if you have a problem with the 'special solenoid' area, you might lean toward suspecting the chips being bad.

Other than that, the wiki is your friend.

Good luck!

Looking at the line diagram and manual I did find Transistor that links to that coil along with a Y popper switch, I added both to my Marcos cart, Thanks again for the help

Have you gone through the machine to make sure every switch is properly adjusted and working using a ball, not your finger, in switch test? Including the trough switches. And making sure switches are not too sensitive by banging on playfield in switch test. Been awhile since getting into my F14, but recall flaky switches being the source of lots of issues.

I will definitely try this. Thanks

I did find on the cpu board what looks to been replaced at one time you can see the one on the left side was definitely messed with and the soder job looks shotty from the front on the board, I'll know more once I pull everything out.
