Hey guys I wanted to document my playfield restoration progress on my F14 tomcat. I picked up this machine a couple months ago from a older gentleman and that had this machine in his basement for 15 years. This machine was not taken care of well. I picked it up and it was super dirty and the playfield needed an extensive cleaning. But the machine worked and played so that was a plus. Unfortunately I didn't take too many before pictures because right when I got it I went to town on cleaning up the mess because well I didn't want to wait any longer. I had a huge problem going into this machine. The mylar was peeling up in multiple places most likely from the lights underneath the field heating up the adhesive. This cause a lot of dirt and crap to get under the mylar which made the machine look awful and also the ball was effected in gameplay any time it hit the peeled up parts. I had never removed mylar ever and I read throughly on how to do it but I could not save some of the paint.

1st Pic here you can see if you zoom in a cloud of dust and dirt under the mylar. Its tough to see and I apologize for the picture. This was after my LED swap.

After mylar removal. Here was the damage. It got worse after the removing of adhesive. Could have been worse but most of the area of paint removed it so close to the flippers its such an eye sore for gameplay.

After a good month of being disgusted of the paint gone from the mylar which in my opinion had to be removed. I contacted a good friend of mine who is a professional artist to see if he could try and touch up the playfield for me. Goal for this project would be to match the paint mostly and not be able to notice unless under good lighting (My gameroom is a really dark light area). F14 has no playfield reproductions in sight so I figured this is the best route and atleast I can have a field that is semi-presentable. Also put brand new insert decals on all of the spots. Here was during progress pics.

We made good progress so far and this is what we got now at this point. The black is really tough to match up. But currently and like I said in my goal I wanted to get a decent enough touch up so that you couldn't tell during play and with just the pinball lights on. We still have more to paint but so far so good.

Update with the playfield. We have finished painting and it looks awesome. When the game is on and glass is over the field its almost impossible to see the difference of the touch up.

I think that looks pretty darn good!

Looks good! A lot better than I could make it look. That's why i'm in for the reproduction playfield.

Haha I know I started on this project a couple days before I seen that post. What are the odds of that.

Good job there! What a difference. Mine is in a lot better shape but the inserts decals are bad and mostly gone. What did you use for those decals? They look good both lit and dark. Can you elaborate - how is the application, thickness - any ball deflection issues just from the decals? Will you be covering the play field with clear coat or varathane? Thanks

I just went with these. Read that people just removed the old decals and placed them right on. They have stuck pretty good. The ball will deflect somewhat on the edges of these decals because they are raised. Sometimes it can be noticeable and other times it's not. It's unpredictable when the ball is slow because that's when it's most affected and can throw off trajectory. I haven't decided on clear coating this playfield. I know that should be the route I go to but is just a touch up job. I also don't have much knowledge or experience clear coating. I'm currently just going to play the machine now that's completed and presentable. Hopefully the 20 layers of wax hold it well. So far so good.

The touch ups probably won't last long without clear coat or mylar...

What kind of paint did you use? If acrylic as I understand it it will not hold up, but enamel paint is tough enough to withstand play without clearcoat or mylar, supposedly.
