I have been working on an F14 for a couple of weeks with a myriad of problems. I have it almost finished, but have one last issue I cannot trace down. The Jet Bumper will randomly trigger a tilt. When the pin came into my shop, it had a pop bumper switch stack with no diode, cap or resistor. Along with a butt load of shorts. I repaired the shorts, the board damage and fixed up the switch stack.

I have tested every switch on the game. They all work and each only registers their switch hit. I have tested pretty well every diode and found nothing. But here we sit... The Jet bumper triggers tilt at random intervals. You might go three games without an issue, or it may tilt every time the jet bumper is hit. For shits and giggles, I have clipped every one of the tilts from the harness. No change.

Started taking video, trying to find the cause. But it just seems so random.

Seems to me some resistor networks can cause the issue that are tied into the switch matrix. Does it give tilt warnings before tilting or just tilt? If it tilts with no warnings chances are its tied into the playfield tilt line.

See if this has been done. If not and the flashers work try making sure they are isolated from the Standups.

Thank you, I will check this later today.

This has all been completed already. I thought it had, but wasn't sure.

Thanks, I will check and swap that, see if it does anything. At this point, I am open to anything, even an exorcist.

I once had a similar issue with my Space Station. The pop wouldn't randomly tilt as I recall, but instead blow a fuse and/or trigger other matrix-linked effects in the game.

I eventually traced it to the pop switch stack's longest leaf just barely - and only occasionally - touching the pop yoke at the end of its travel. It took a long time to discover this, but once I did and corrected it, the issue never happened again.

It may be a switch issue that only happens when one or more switches are closed and another switch (pop bumper) closes. Second video appears to show at least one ball locked when the tilt happens. In switch edges test, put a ball in each of the locks one at a time, then test the pop bumper switch. You're looking for switches not registering correctly, like the pop bumper triggering tilt or slam tilt switch.

Pin wiki is down at the moment, but I suspect there are instructions there on how to determine if a switch matrix issue is on the cpu board or playfield.

A shorted switch diode can cause this. They dont usually short electrically, but may get bent so that diode lead touches a wrong switch solder lug. Check all playfield switches.

I never did find this. It has been driving me nuts.

When I got f-14 it had multiple switch problems. The pull resistor network was bad and a diode was cracked on a flipper coil. The resistor network issue caused random tilts and the diode issue caused the ball locks to get emptied at random times.

I wonder why F-14 eats that resistor network on the MPU seemingly more often than other games. Pretty sure I have a memory of desoldering one that just crumbled apart after the solder was loosened.

Someone has replaced the resistor network at some point, but I will check it all the same. Thank you.

You were correct! The issue is confirmed to be a board issue and very likely the resistor array as you mentioned.

generic part number is usually something like A10-472.

If you want to get hacky you might find only on resistor is bad, or the last two, etc... You can build a resistor network out of individual resistors. I've done it a few times to get a game going instead of waiting on a part. It can be done pretty neatly if you take your time.
