did some research last night seems to be a somewhat common problem????

anyone else have this happen, have had issues where machine would shut off during gameplay after about 30 minutes of playing. then reboot then could play fine again for a bit.

i am guessing the main driver board has issues? looks like there was some work done it to before. will post pics up tonight if i get a chance.

also is there any vids on troubleshooting these wpc95 boards?

There's a good chance your blown fuse and resest are two different issues. When does the fuse blow?

If F103 blows you prob. have a bad coil or diode on one of the coils. Could also be a transistor that drives one of the coils. First step is to figure out which coil is blowing that fuse.

#3 12 years ago

did change out 2 switches but didnt change any coils except for the vaniishing magnet coil and that has a plug on the end so know that one is done properly unless it is defective out of the box.

yeah now with led's i really notice that i am getting pulsating out of the lights really bad to the point when doing the flash and lamp test before the unit reboots itself the flashers will quit working all together until i reboot it again then the flashers work again for a bit.

suppose I could swap the board between this and my scared stiff or would anyone be against that??

#5 12 years ago

SS and TOTAN are both WPC-95 so no problem swapping boards....If swapping MPU, swap the EEProms too

#6 12 years ago

mpu could be possibly causing the power down issues also you think?

#7 12 years ago

Several things can cause resets....

Bad Bridge Rectifier and/or Capacitor on the 5V supply
Bad 5V regulator
Switch matrix issues (where machine is detecting Tilt or Game Start)
Bad diode on a Coil
MPU battery corrosion
Failing IC chip
Low Power from your wall outlet

Eliminate the easy ones first and then go from there

Did you check the interconnect cable between the MPU and Driver board sometimes those can cause some issues, I would recommend changing all the ribbon cables with new ones, GPE carries them.

overnighting a power driver board from baa just incase it is the board. can send my old one off to get repaired if it has problems

going to check all suggestions though still once I get home since I want to play totan!!!

#10 12 years ago

I would swap your MPU from SS first....That will eliminate half the sources of reset errors.

Also check for cracks on header pins, good idea to resolder reflow them.

Try this first as Robert has suggested or follow what he mentioned above,Ordering a new board doesn't sometimes solve the problem. It could be other things.

except for the vaniishing magnet coil

Where exactly is this coil located on the playfield?,I'm not too familar with the lay out on TOTAN.
Did you check in the manual to see what drives the F103 fuse?

#14 12 years ago

magnet coil is in the middle upper playfield. there was a louder humming noise which sounded like a magnet was stuck on when I 1st started getting the blown fuser problems. (this was after the new coil was instaled) so I rebooted and found out non of the magnet coils or the shooting start orb coils were working either. even in test mode after replacing the fuse.

headed to radio shack on way home to get fuses.

If you replace the fuse and it blows again then your problem is mostly the Transistor that drives the magnet.

#16 12 years ago

I already replaced the fuse once and it blew again last night.

I will replace fuser and disconnect that magnet totally and see if problem happens again. otherwise we know magnet is faulty if it goesnt pop with mag unplugged

#17 12 years ago

Transistor on the driver board is what drives the magnet. If you look in the manual it will tell you which transistor it is.

#18 12 years ago

I am on the road now with now way to get to manual before getting to radio shack. can anyone get me that transitior # or rating?
I will buy one while I am there getting fuses.

otherwise will have to go later on I guess.

#19 12 years ago

It's a TIP36C part number 5191-12179-00

#20 12 years ago

ok got home everything looks ok but it kills everything on the j116 terminal so i am guessing i possibly got the wrong magnet shipped to me?? just remembered got 1 more place to go for work still arghh!

i will have to tear it apart to check the part # on magnet since one ends in 79 and the other ends in 97.

not sure if that would cause a problem

#21 12 years ago

well somehow in hell the pin gods musta been looking down,

anyways i put in old magnet after i verified the new one was correct and then also put in a new fuse from radio shack and i have played about 10 games no issues and everything in working great! damn this mofo is fast especially the swirl ramp after a good cleaning!!

well looks like i will have spent $50 overnight shipping for nothing but i guess i will send back or keep the board. not sure yet.

Why did you change it in the first place if there was nothing wrong with it?

kept getting error on startup saying it is broken but others have said they have same error but works fine. i figured while i was shopping it out might as well put a new one in, not so sure new one works though

#24 12 years ago

Maybe one of those coils/magnets were causing a short last time you had them installed?

I see,Any errors popping up now?

Hey guys new to forum and need some help with my TOTAN. Brief history on the machine is Santa brought it in 1996 and has been in my possession for the past 5 years. Has never had any major issues and has only needed general maintenance through the years. A few weeks ago my nephew was playing (6 year old) and said there were no more balls. So I opened her up to find all the balls in the bazaar and f103 blown. So check my switches replace the fuse and on start up f103 blows. So I replaced the bazaar solenoid and still blowing. So here I am now. I found this thread and it has opened a pinball door I did not know exists. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might be better off opening a new thread with your issue. This one is 9 years old.
