Quoted from btrip:

Less disturbed by what?
You want the playfield to breathe at this point. Leave the glass off.

Ah, but I'm repainting and reflooring the game room while this cures.

Shouldn't of taped off parts of the playfield when clearing it. You want to remove everything from the top and do the whole thing like one sheet.

Also with varathane its much different then auto clear. I would say after you let this cure for a few days. Lightly wet sand with 600 or 1000 grit. Smooth it out some and do another 3 or 4 light coats and then wet sand again.

And yes btrip is right. Let it breathe. Closed up in the cab it will take much longer to dry/cure.

Opened it up per advice. I will be closing it when I'm working on the walls and floor as it kicks up a bunch of stuff that may stick. But when I'm not working I will leave it open.

NICE! I am picking up an F-14 at an Estate Auction this week for $480. Not as bad as yours, but I hope to make it look as good. Good luck brother!

Here's a couple new photos. I don't know if the first one conveys it, but it is really smooth and shiny!

The second photo shows the worst run. There are two other smaller ones too. It sort of looks like a lot of glue was spilled and it sort of looks like the end of a porno movie. Aside from the runs I'm really pleased with it. I'll sort those out.

Looks good. I have never used varathane but runs should block sand out like auto clear. You did this quickly for first time.

I've got a lot of free time.
Thinking I might be turning around and doing it all over again on the second F14 after I have this one playable again..

I've been working on the game room too. Below is a photo from two months ago and a photo from today. They were taken from almost the same spot, slightly different angle. I'm quite pleased with the difference.

Love the Xenon in the corner!

Dumb question - but what is it like playing a system 11 game on a clearcoat surface?

#60 12 years ago

Not happy right now.

I went to wet sand some runs, got carried away, and sanded off some inserts. They look like crap now so I'm going to order new inserts, sit around waiting for them, reapply them, and try again. I guess I didn't spray on a very thick coat last week. I seems like it can be saved, but it's disappointing.

I guess things were just coming along too quickly..

Many light coats is better with varathane. I usually avoid thick coats.

Words like 'light', 'heavy', and 'thick' are subjective. I think my definition is heavy is other peoples light. I used 1.25 cans with 4 coats (2 light, 2 heavy).

I was watching the pindude video where he does a light coat of auto clear on the first coat. It was much heavier than the heaviest coat I've ever sprayed.

Brutal Joe.....take a deep breath and work it out!

Just want to say that I am back on the horse. I sprayed some good coats this weekend, now I'm letting I harden so I can reassemble it.

Reassembling has begun! This part if fun when it isn't frustrating. Mostly fun though!

Getting close now.

When I started this project I had lots of free time. I don't have as much now so the second half is taking much longer.

It is reassembled and plays! It's really easy to put back together when you have a second machine to look at. There are a couple switches that need adjusting. The pop bumper won't light up, I'm going to resolder it.

My primary headscratcher is the scoreboard. When I started it worked fine. Now I get very little from the top row and most everything from the bottom row. I get the same results with the scoreboard from the second machine except the top row is totally out on it. I had presumed the scoreboard from the parts machine was broken, but are they both? Does this photo look like your run of the mill bad scoreboard?

Did you ever figure out the issue with the scoreboard? I have the same problem with my F-14. The bottom (players 3 & 4) wont light up. Could it be a fuse I don't see?

Thanks for posting this. It's VERY helpful. I mean that in the sense that I was thinking of removing the mylar from my F-14 and now I've decided not to!

Great job though!
