A friend called & said he used to be able to press the start button & it would start a game but now it does nothing. Would this be a bad battery type of thing where it's not remembering it's on free play?

Start button switch work in switch test ? Credits on the game ? Correct number of balls in the ball trough and all accounted for ?
If it was losing memory, you'd have scores reset, time and date not set, and everything to factory defaults.

Could be. Will need to make certain fresh batteries are installed, and then go into the adjustments menu through the coin door service switches and re-select the free play option. Page 10 of the manual explains how to use the service switches, adjustment #23 is the free play setting.
